Golden State diners may be all about sunshine — but when it comes to tipping, they’re leaving servers in the shade.

California diners tipped less than any other state in the nation, according to a new report that ranked the Bear Flag State dead last in restaurant generosity.

The state’s overall tip rate came in at 17.3%, about 1.5 percentage points below the national average of 18.8%, according to Toast’s Q1 2026 Restaurant Tipping Trends report.

That means Cali’s customers were the biggest wallet squeezers at the table — at least when it comes to card and digital payments tracked by the restaurant technology company.

Toast analyzed aggregated tip transactions from restaurants using its platform, which serves roughly 171,000 locations nationwide.

The report did not include cash tips, meaning the findings don’t capture every dollar diners may have slipped servers under the table.

Still, California couldn’t catch a break in either major category.

At full-service restaurants, where diners are typically expected to tip more generously, the state’s customers left an average 17.7% tip — compared with the national average of 19.3%.

At quick-service restaurants, Golden State diners tipped just 14.8%, trailing the national average of 15.8%.

Nationwide, tipping habits have remained relatively steady over the past two years, with full-service restaurant tips hovering between 19.1% and 19.4% and quick-service tips holding around 15.8% to 16%, according to Toast.

But before West Coast diners get branded as the nation’s biggest penny-pinchers, there’s more than meets the receipt.

Industry observers say California’s lower tip numbers may have less to do with stinginess and more to do with its unique restaurant landscape — including higher menu prices, a requirement that servers receive the full state minimum wage before tips, and the growing use of service charges at some restaurants.

In other words: diners may be tipping differently — not necessarily skipping out entirely.

Still, the numbers put California at the bottom of the tipping totem pole.

It was followed by the District of Columbia, where diners tipped an average of 17.5%, Washington at 17.8%, Nevada at 18.2% and Florida at 18.3%.

Meanwhile, Delaware diners proved the most generous tippers in the nation, leaving an average overall tip rate of 22.1%.

For comparison, New Yorkers landed closer to the middle of the pack, with an overall tip rate of 18.7% — just below the national average.

The report also found that Americans are far more likely to reward sit-down service than grab-and-go orders.

Full-service restaurants averaged a 19.3% tip, while quick-service restaurants averaged 15.8%. Takeout customers were the least generous of all, with an average tip of just 13.7%.

California’s low-tipping title also comes as diners nationwide are growing increasingly fed up with the modern gratuity game.

As The Post previously reported, a recent Popmenu survey found that 78% of consumers believe tipping practices have “become ridiculous,” while 74% said they’ve noticed restaurants raising the suggested gratuity amounts displayed on digital payment screens.

Those prompts may be influencing behavior: 59% of the 1,000 adults surveyed said they feel compelled to leave a tip when faced with a suggested gratuity screen.

The pushback has fueled a growing backlash against so-called “tip creep” — the expansion of tipping requests into places where customers traditionally weren’t expected to leave gratuities.

Still, restaurant owners say Americans continue to support tipping when it’s tied to actual service.

“It’s kind of ingrained in American culture that if you go out to dinner at a restaurant, and you sit down and you’re served, I think that a 20% tip is a good tip,” Vicki Parmelee, owner of Jumby Bay Island Grill in Jupiter, Florida, previously told Fox News Digital.

But Parmelee said customers are increasingly frustrated by payment screens that ask for tips in situations where gratuities were once uncommon — like grabbing a coffee or ordering at a counter.

“It is pretty annoying to go up to a service counter and order a coffee and then have them turn around a terminal and expect a tip just for handing you a coffee,” she said.

More than a third of consumers surveyed — 36% — said they typically skip the preset options and enter a custom tip instead, suggesting diners are looking for more control over when and how much they give.

“A tip is always something that’s earned,” Parmelee said. “It’s not something they should ever expect.”

So while California may have plenty of five-star views, perfect weather and beachside dining spots, its tipping habits earned a decidedly less glamorous ranking.
