Buc-ee’s employee reveals what happens to tons of leftover food: ‘CEOs should be ashamed’

Buc-ee’s employees are spilling the secrets on the mega-chain’s food waste policy, and it’s not appetizing.

Known for the “cleanest restrooms in America,” the chain has a cult-like following as it has become a very fun tourist trap with its massive gift shop and bronzed, smiling beaver to score a picture with.

The world’s friendliest beaver serves as a massive convenience hub and gas station, giving road trippers a place to fill up their tank and now their bellies. Buc-ee’s has tons of grab-and-go meals, fresh barbecue and a full-scale food market.

However, in a recent Buc-ee’s Reddit post, employees are clocking in to dish about where all the leftovers go. It all started after the poster, seemingly a customer, shared what they saw on a late-night run.

“I went to my local Buc-ee’s last night around 9 p.m. I watched them throw about 50ish sandwiches in the trash. What a waste of food! No telling how much food gets thrown out on a daily basis,” the post read.

Before employees weighed in, a trove of upset guests flooded the post with comments.

“That’s just sad. So many hungry people just to waste all this food and clothing. The CEOs should be ashamed of [themselves],” a commenter wrote.

“Please email them to contact a local food bank to pick up their surplus. If enough people send an email, it could make a difference. I know food banks who would love the opportunity,” another urged.

An employee chimed in with their experience, only adding fuel to the fire.

“Worst part of working third shift at Bucees is throwing away all the food that you work so hard to make. Throw away 50 [sandwiches] to make 150 more that night just to throw away 95 of those in 2 days.”

And it isn’t only the food that goes to waste, the company also throws out its old merchandise.

“Same with the merchandise. Once the season is over it all gets destroyed. They shred the clothes so no one will dumpster dive even though it goes in a compactor,” the employed claimed.

While it may seem wasteful, Buc-ee’s isn’t the only chain to toss its scraps. Places like Dunkin’ or McDonald’s are not able to donate any or all leftovers to food banks, as it likely violates food safety policies.

According to the FDA, hot foods must be kept at or above 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything below that threshold could have bacterial growth and may be unsafe to eat.

Plus, improper packaging could also contaminate wrapped foods, much of what Buc-ee’s sells. So while it seems wasteful, the convenience store hub likely is unable to donate.

Redditors agreed, as some commented very similar sentiments.

“Often, there are local ordinances in effect that mean restaurants can’t donate food. Don’t just assume it’s the CEO. Most of the stupid policies in the universe is your government at work,” a user wrote.

Another commenter added, “Every restaurant and store does that. They face civil liability if someone eats out-of-date food and gets sick.”

The Post reached out to Buc-ee’s for comment but has not heard back.
