A 22-year-old alleged drag racer was charged with murder in connection with a harrowing high-speed crash that split another vehicle in half, killing a 3-year-old girl and injuring her pregnant mother.
Christian Isaiah Randall was reportedly street racing against another driver when he plowed his Hyundai Genesis into the pair’s Toyota Camry at an intersection in Tucson, Arizona, on Friday afternoon, according to police and the victims’ family.
Randall was cuffed at the scene while the toddler, identified as Anna in a GoFundMe, was pronounced dead at a hospital. Her mother, who is nine months pregnant, is still recovering in the hospital, according to the fundraiser. They were the only two people in the car at the time of the crash.
Chilling photos of the wreck showed the family’s decimated Camry was split in half. The car seat that Anna was strapped into was still intact, while the mom and daughter’s belongings, all pink, were scattered across the roadway, photos taken by KVOA show.
Randall was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder, two counts of endangerment, and two counts of aggravated assault. He is being held on $500,000 bond at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex, according to the outlet.
Officials determined that the Genesis and another vehicle’s excessive speeds caused the fatal collision. The other vehicle fled the scene, the publication reported.
Anna’s family believes the thrill-seeking drivers were “street racing,” according to the GoFundMe.
The tragic tot is survived by her parents, her older sister, and her soon-to-be-born sibling.
Her family remembered her as “a bright, joyful, and loving little girl who brought so much happiness to everyone around her.”
“Her laughter, her curiosity, and her light will never be forgotten,” they wrote on the fundraiser.
The GoFundMe was just a few hundred dollars short of its $90,000 goal on Monday afternoon. It received more than 2,000 donations in just three days.
