California Highway Patrol officers arrested a suspected drunk driver in the Victorville area over Father’s Day weekend after allegedly finding eight empty alcohol containers inside the vehicle.

“During this Maximum Enforcement Period, Officers from the Victorville area remained committed to keeping our roadways safe by actively enforcing impaired driving laws and educating motorist on the dangers of driving under the influence,” CHP Victorville posted on Facebook.

Police identified twelve unopened alcoholic beverages, eight empty alcoholic beverages and one opened alcoholic beverage within the driver’s reach.

“The vehicle pictured in the second image serves as a reminder of why these enforcement efforts matter,” the Facebook post added.

Prior to Father’s Day weekend, CHP announced a statewide “Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP)” focused on impaired driving.

“Summer brings more people onto California’s roadways, increasing the risks of impaired driving. Impaired driving continues to claim hundreds of lives in California each year and forever changes countless others,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said.

About 30% of traffic crash fatalities in the U.S. are drunk drivers and “32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

California also experiences an average of 34,000 impaired related accidents per year and during CHP’s MEP during Halloween of last year, officers recorded “503 DUI arrests, 1943 speeding citations, 8029 total enforcement actions, and 6 fatal crashes in CHP jurisdiction.”
