When a two-pound space rock smashed through the roof of a Hillsborough, New Jersey home on July 16, 2024, it did more than just ruin the master bedroom – it delivered a scientific goldmine to Earth.
Now, a newly published study reveals that the space rock — named “Hillsborough” — contains a wealth of amino acids and organic compounds, marking it as one of the most scientifically significant meteorites ever recovered.
On July 16, the rock entered Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of 32,000 miles/h past the Statue of Liberty. Sixty observers from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania reported seeing the meteor. Sixteen people in New York and New Jersey felt the shockwave.
The fragile rock broke into pieces, with falling pebbles stretching from Staten Island into New Jersey. Hillsborough was at the far end of the cloud, where the largest rocks came down, and the only recovered rock was the one that hit the house.
The homeowner heard a “loud crash” at the time and found a hole in the ceiling in the master bedroom, along with a strong sulfur-like odor and black fragments that covered the bed and carpet.
The rock’s pristine condition has been vital for research, thanks to the homeowner carefully preserving the fragments immediately after impact and storing pieces in glass jars.
The meteorite is only the second observed fall of a primitive CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite, a rare class of space rocks that preserves some of the oldest material in the solar system.
Scientists found evidence that this asteroid once had brine-liquid water, but not just any water. It was brine-like, and as this water evaporated, it left behind high concentrations of salt.
While scientists have seen water-altered meteorites before, they haven’t seen this specific pattern of high-concentration salt formation in a CM carbonaceous chondrite until now.
This is providing scientists with new insight into the role of water, brines and asteroid chemistry in shaping the organic inventory of the solar system. The fragment was more altered by water than is typically seen in CM2 carbonaceous chondrites, suggesting that the meteorite originated from a parent asteroid where liquid water evaporated and left concentrated salts.
The high concentration of salt can create molecules crucial to life on Earth. According to the SETI Institute, Cosmochemist Queenie Chan suggests “primitive carbonaceous chondrites delivered organic matter to the early Earth” and that in living organisms, organometallic compounds are found in blood and used in photosynthesis.
Those organic compounds were also in amino acids, similar to those found in CM2 chondrites. Analysis confirms that the meteorite, which records chemical processes dating back 4.5 billion years, contains a diverse suite of carbon-bearing compounds and prebiotic molecules.
These findings offer researchers a window into the building blocks of life that may have been delivered to the early Earth, revealing a composition significantly altered by water compared to other CM-type meteorites.
Some of the meteorite fragments will be preserved at the American Museum of Natural History.
