An Alabama high school basketball coach charged with sex crimes against a student allegedly solicited her victim into sending “obscene material depicting sexual activity” – just days before she resigned from her role in charge of a championship-winning team.
Paige Adams, 35, allegedly made the lewd request for the content on March 16 at least twice, according to court documents obtained by WIAT-TV on Wednesday.
She stepped down from her gig as head coach of the Cold Springs High School girls basketball team nine days later.
She is also accused of sending such material to the student – who has only been identified as under 19 – at least 28 times between Feb. 13 and March 9.
Adams will be arraigned on May 22 and it comes after she was indicted Tuesday on more than 30 sex crimes, which could see her spend 31 years behind bars.
The charges include “engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student,” sexual contact involving a pupil under 19 and distributing obscene material to a student, CBS42 reported.
Adams had only been the coach of the Cold Springs Eagles girls team for a year, leading them to the state championship — before she resigned on March 25.
Her team lost out to North Sand Mountain in the finals, but finished with a respectable 23-11 record. Adams was a former student of Cold Springs, winning two back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009.
But, she resigned after school district superintendent Shane Barnette received a complaint.
“This is the first formal complaint I have received regarding this employee,” the superintendent said.
“As soon as the concern was brought forward, an investigation was immediately initiated. The employee chose to resign at that time.”
Adams was escorted off school grounds – and Barnette said she left without “confrontation,” the Cullman Tribune reported.
“She was aware that the investigation was continuing,” he said.
Adams’ husband of 15 years, Drew, is the coach of the boys basketball team, assuming the role in April last year.
On April 6, he filed for divorce and demanded full custody of their son, Parker.
