A mom-to-be was left heartbroken after her own mother ruined her pregnancy announcement, with the awkward video of the incident going viral and racking up over 16 million views.
Like many expectant parents, Olena Perez wanted to record the moment she shared her exciting news with her family – that she was expecting her first child.
She enlisted a stranger to help pull off the surprise, asking them to pretend to take a family photo.
Instead, the stranger was actually filming, meaning the big reveal would be captured on video.
Perez began arranging her family in a line for the photo, but just before they were about to say ‘cheese,’ she said she needed to grab her lipstick from her bag.
She then pulled out a pregnancy test from her handbag instead, to show her mom.
With an excited look on her face, she waited for her mom’s reaction but was instead met with confusion.
Her mom tapped her on the hand, telling her to put the pregnancy test away, and tried to smile at the camera as if nothing had happened.
Perez quickly explained to her mom that she was pregnant, and her mom responded, “Really?” but appeared otherwise uninterested, pointing towards the camera as if to say, “Can we just get this photo?”
The mom-to-be then looked around at the others in the family line-up and tried to get their attention, exclaiming, “I’m pregnant!” but the reactions fell just as flat.
Not getting the response she had hoped for, Perez gave up and went to retrieve her phone from the person recording, saying “Oh my god,” and rolling her eyes at the failed reveal.
She captioned the clip, “My mom loves a good pic!”
In the comments, many sympathized with her, saying, “Girl you deserved so much more out of them.”
Someone else pointed out, “Narcissistic mothers ruin everything.”
And a third commented: “The nice thing is you can just show this to the therapist instead of trying to explain.”
“Does she know she’s your mom?” another joked.
“I’m glad you’re starting your own family … because I don’t know what this is…,” another remarked.
Others were confused by the awkward family dynamic, with someone asking, “No offence, but what kind of family is this?”
“How did not one of them hug her?” said one user.
A comment with 300,000 likes read: “I’ve never seen so many people not care about a pregnancy announcement at the same time.”
However, a few others tried to cut the mom and family some slack.
“No offense but just take the damn picture and then make it about you, she probably really wanted a family photo, or simply because she’s a mom and no longer has you all living under the same roof,” suggested one commenter.
Meanwhile, others took issue with the concept of pregnancy announcements in general.
“Is everyone just supposed to be overjoyed she can procreate?” one user asked.
Pregnancy announcements have become a major trend on social media, with many parents going to great lengths to create memorable, and viral, reveals, sometimes with less than ideal outcomes.

Influencer and ex-reality TV star, Ella May Ding, was forced to respond to backlash last month after her sponsored pregnancy announcement on Instagram didn’t get the response she had hoped for.
In May, the star took to Instagram to announce she was expecting her first child with husband Guy Palermo, but the post was actually an ad for pregnancy test brand, Clear Blue.
Some fans said that the move felt “off” because she was trying to cash in on a pregnancy announcement.
But Ding argued that anyone would do the same thing in her position.
“It was a no-brainer. When the opportunity came to me, I was like, ‘Well, Clear Blue literally told me I’m pregnant.’ Like, I don’t really know how much more you can align with a brand,” Ding told Yahoo Lifestyle.
