The University of Michigan fired Sherrone Moore after the school found “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer – hours later, he was booked into a jail.

It is quite a rapid fall from grace for Moore, who less than two years ago was on top of the college football world as a national champion.

Moore found himself in controversy during the investigation into Michigan’s potential sign-stealing, but this controversy trumps them all.

Here is a look at how Moore got to where he is today.

Playing Days

Moore is a former college football player, standing at 6-foot-5 and over 300 pounds during his college days. After spending his first two years at a community college near his hometown, he transferred to Oklahoma and played there for two years.

Moore played in 14 games as with the Sooners, winning the Big 12 Championship in both seasons. In 2007, they defeated top-ranked Missouri in the Big 12 title game, but the Sooners lost the Fiesta Bowl both seasons.

First Coaching Gig, Rise Through the Ranks

Just one year after graduating from Oklahoma, Moore joined the coaching staff at Louisville as a graduate assistant. He was promoted to a full-time assistant in 2012, becoming the team’s tight ends coach.

Moore left to hold the same position at Central Michigan in 2014 before also becoming the team’s assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator in 2017. In 2018, he then landed in Ann Arbor to become the Wolverines’ tight ends coach.

Moore was the tight ends coach through 2020 and was promoted in early 2021 to the team’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Michigan was named the top offensive line in both 2021 and 2022, and with Jim Harbaugh running the show, the Wolverines were creeping back into a powerhouse, making the College Football Playoff both seasons for the first time.

Moore’s first taste as a head coach came in 2023, when he became the acting head coach while Harbaugh served two separate three-game suspensions stemming from the sign-stealing scandal. Michigan completed a perfect season, winning the national championship over Washington.

After Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was promoted to head coach. His first season was a disappointment, as Michigan went 8-5, but one of those wins was a huge upset as three-touchdown underdogs in Columbus against Ohio State.

Moore served a two-game suspension this season as the sign-stealing scandal investigation continued, and despite going 9-3 in the regular season, the school’s winning streak against Ohio State ended, and the Wolverines missed out on the playoff.

Firing, Arrest

Moore was shockingly fired on Thursday, and the University of Michigan quickly announced it found credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Shortly after, he was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail in Michigan.

Pittsfield police said they responded to a home as part of an assault investigation. Police said a suspect was taken into custody and that the incident does not appear to be random. Police said the suspect was lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County prosecutor.

Police said the investigation was ongoing. At the time of publication, Moore had yet to be charged.

Moore got married in 2015, and he and his wife have three daughters.

Francis Xavier “Biff” Poggi was named interim head coach and will be on the sidelines when Michigan takes on Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31. Earlier this season, Poggi took over for Moore during his suspension.
