The University of Michigan has named Francis “Biff” Poggi as interim head football coach after Sherrone Moore’s firing and subsequent arrest.

Michigan announced in December 2025 that Moore was fired as coach after an investigation found him having an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” After news broke of his firing, Moore was arrested. He was accused of after barging into the apartment of the alleged woman he was involved with.

Poggi was subsequently named as Moore’s replacement.

Poggi’s first game with the Wolverines is scheduled for New Year’s Eve as Michigan prepares to play Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.

When Did Biff Poggi Join Michigan Football?

Poggi was hired by Michigan in 2016 as an analyst. Five years later, he was promoted to associate head coach under Jim Harbaugh. After two seasons alongside Harbaugh, Poggi left Michigan to be the head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Earlier this year, Poggi returned to Michigan as the team’s associate head coach.

Where Else Has Biff Poggi Coached?

At a collegiate level, Poggi was the head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 2023 to 2024.

Before stepping on a college football field, Poggi was a longtime high school coach in Baltimore. He spent 19 seasons at his alma mater, The Gilman School. He got his start as an assistant before being named head coach. During his time there, Poggi helped the team earn 13 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference titles. Poggi went on to create the football program at Saint Frances Academy where he served as head coach from 2017 to 2020.

What Did Biff Poggi Do Before Coaching?

Poggi played college football at Pittsburgh before he graduated from Duke in 1984. Following his time as a player, Poggi became a hedge fund manager. In 1986, he founded his company Samuel James Limited, which made him a multimillionaire. After spending three decades with his company, Poggi relinquished the firm.

Is Biff Poggi Married?

Poggi married his college sweetheart, Amy Mix, in March 1986. The couple share five children: Sam, Jim, Henry, Mellie and Mary.

Why Did Biff Poggi Take Over for Sherrone Moore?

Michigan fired Moore after an investigation resulted in “credible evidence” that the coach and a staff member had engaged in an “inappropriate relationship.”

“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” the university said in a statement.

Following his firing, Moore was arrested after he allegedly barged into the apartment of the alleged woman he was involved with. First assistant prosecutor for Washtenaw County Kati Rezmierski claimed during Moore’s arraignment that the coach expressed “threatening” and “intimidating” behavior.

Moore was charged with one count of third-degree felony home invasion, one count misdemeanor stalking related to a domestic relationship and one count misdemeanor breaking and entering. Moore faces six years and 90 days in prison if convicted. The judge granted Moore’s release on $25,000 bond on Friday, December 12. Moore is required to wear a GPS tether, have no contact with the staff member and continue with mental health treatment.
