Few families in American sports are as closely associated with one team as the Maras are with the New York Giants.

After Tim Mara, founded the team in 1925, ownership has passed through three generations, with John Mara assuming the titles of President, CEO and co-owner in 2005.

With both his father, Wellington Mara, and grandfather enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, John has had a lot to live up to. During his tenure, the Giants have won a pair of Super Bowls and, along with New York Jets ownership, brought the Super Bowl to the New York area in 2014 for the first time ever.

The Giants have had a bumpier road ever since, only enjoying one winning season since 2017. But with a rich history and loyal fanbase, there’s always hope in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Giants Have Been in John Mara’s Family His Entire Life

John has been a part of the Giants’ front office since 1991 when he joined as general counsel. He ascended to President and CEO in 2005 when his father, Wellington Mara, died.

Wellington became team owner in 1959, inheriting it from his father, Tim Mara. Tim was the Giants’ founding owner, helping start the team in 1925.

The Giants Have Won 2 Super Bowls Under His Leadership

The Giants snapped a 17-year Super Bowl title drought in 2007 when they beat the then-undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Four years later, they beat the Patriots again in Super Bowl XLVI.

The Mara Family Is Worth an Estimated $3 Billion

The Mara family sold a 10 percent stake in the Giants to the Koch family in September 2025 at a $10 billion valuation. The Maras, however, do not own the team entirely, as businessman Steve Tisch is also a co-owner.

John’s net worth is estimated around $500 million, but his family has a $3 billion fortune, largely due to their ownership with the Giants, according to Essentially Sports.

Though that makes the family only the 24th-wealthiest NFL ownership group out of 32 teams, the profit is still impressive: Tim founded the Giants with a $500 investment.

John Mara Is the Uncle of Actresses Rooney and Kate Mara

John’s brother Chris is married to Kathleen Rooney, a descendant of Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney. The two share four kids, sons Daniel and Conor, and daughters Rooney and Kate. The latter two are both award-winning actresses — with rooting interest in both their parents’ football teams.

“I grew up in New York and spent almost every Sunday at Giants Stadium, so my love of the team runs deep,” Kate told the New York Post in 2016. “I love the Steelers but at the end of the day, if they’re playing the Giants, I bleed blue.”

Or, as she joked in a 2014 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, “If I’m mad at my mom, I root for the Giants, and if I’m pissed at my dad, I root for the Steelers.”
