Walton Goggins put in a lot of effort to make sure he was looking and feeling his best for The White Lotus.
“I may have an extreme White Lotus diet,” Goggins, 52, exclusively told Us Weekly on Wednesday, October 30, while promoting his partnership with Wal-Mart for the brand’s Deals of Desire “advertainment” series. “I’m not a big breakfast guy, so I try to mini-fast at least three or four times a week.”
Goggins added that he incorporates fasting to his diet for most projects, including his upcoming appearance on Mike White’s anthology series.
“My White Lotus diet often centered around not eating until around one o’clock in the afternoon,” he said. “But I’m always like that when I work, and [I] only [have] two nine-minute boiled eggs.”
The actor teased that cooking his hard-boiled eggs was “the key” for the dish to turn out just the way he likes it. While Goggins shared that he stayed away from carbs, he would pair his eggs with another healthy side.
“No bread, nine-minute boiled eggs with avocado. That’s what I do,” he explained. “And then a sensible dinner around five o’clock that involves some protein.”
Goggins noted that in addition to “keeping it light” with his meals, he also spent time working out at the gym.
In January, the Fallout star was announced as one of the cast members for the third installment of the hit series White Lotus. The following month, filming began in Thailand. In addition to Goggins, the series will also star Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey, Catherine Hook, Sam Nivola, Patrick Schwarzenegger and more. Natasha Rothwell is also returning after playing spa manager Belinda in season 1.
While on set, Goggins shared that he and his costars formed a close connection while living together on location.
“You eat every meal together. You’re sequestered in these five-star hotels, these golden handcuffs — if you will — and you get to know each other very well,” he told Us. “It’s very rare in the life of an actor to get the opportunity to live in the place where you work. And so it was a little jarring at first, very convenient just to wake up and walk five minutes to the set.”
For Goggins, the arrangement was unusual at first for him. He explained that when he’s working on a project, he likes to focus on his character and not see what everyone else is up to.
“If I’m not working, I don’t like to think about other people working because I want to be in the game,” he reflected. “And you can’t help but think about the other people that are working because sometimes the lights are [set] on your balcony, to light their seat.”
Despite Goggins finding the optics a “little tricky” at times, he ultimately found the experience to be “the opportunity of a lifetime.” While Goggins can’t say much about the new White Lotus season, he teased it’s going to be a real thinker.
“I don’t think anyone writes an existential crisis quite the way Mike White does. And for a lot of us, you don’t know what came first, the chicken or the egg,” he said. “For me, this thing that I’m going through turned out to be similar to some of the things I’ve gone through in my own life.”
He added that the characters’ stories helped the cast be “extremely supportive of each other” and formed genuine friendships.
In addition to joining the White Lotus cast, Goggins has teamed up with Wal-Mart for their 10-chapter ad series to promote their upcoming Black Friday and holiday deals. The program also features some of Goggins’ friends including Lisa Rinna, Tay Diggs, Anthony Ramos and more.
“It is just this wonderful campaign that Walmart has kind of come in this kind of hybrid between entertainment and narrative storytelling and highlighting a lot of the deals that they have coming up for Christmas [and] Black Friday,” he told Us. “And I read it and just desperately wanted to be a part of it.”
The special will tackle a series of genres, from sports to westerns. Goggins got to channel his expertise for his character Slippery Jim, who the actor refers to as a “ne’er-do-well.”
“[It] is kind of part and parcel of a number of the things that I’ve played over the course of my career, and he just is meddling in a family’s ranch for his own kind of personal gains,” he said. “Over the course of that, you see some really cool things that Walmart is kind of promoting for their Black Friday deals, and we just had a great time filming it.”
