Stay far away.
Half the fun of traveling to an unknown place is crossing it off a travel bucket list and then deciding if you ever want to go back — or not.
According to a post in the r/geography subreddit on Reddit, many Americans can quickly rattle off a place they’ve stepped foot in and thought, “Yup, never again.” It was surprising to see some of the places people hated.
But what was even more shocking was that NYC got off easy.
While Manhattan may be on the brink of an economic exodus as the Big Apple takes a beating over crime, filth and a slacking school system from top CEOs — turns out, things could get a whole lot worse, according to travelers who didn’t seem to think Gotham belonged anywhere near the top of this list.
The cities travelers hope to never see again were given a thumbs down for various reasons: crime, bad vibes, too crowded, too apocalyptic, obnoxious residents — and so on.
Here are the top 10 so-called worst cities in the US — in no particular order.
1. Stockton, CA
“Most meth. Most crime. Most collective reckless disregard for self-preservation of any place I’ve ever been,” one commenter wrote.
“Doesn’t seem to be a good reason to go back,” agreed another person.
2. Dallas, TX
“That place felt like an eerie “Walking Dead” city without the apocalypse,” claimed one traveler.
“Most soulless city I’ve ever been to,” chimed in someone else.
3. Miami, FL
“I’m excited to never go back to Miami,” quipped one commenter.
“I actively hated every second I was in Miami, and tried to cut my trip short but couldn’t. I love palm trees, beaches, and ‘Golden Girls,’ but it was the meanest and fakest place I’ve ever been. I agree the vibe was just awful,” another person strongly shared.
4. Cairo, IL
“There are some rough smaller towns around Chicago but nothing compares to Cairo,” one person wrote.
“It has a tenth of the population it did at its peak, fewer now than 1860. Frequent floods, lynchings, and race riots. Deindustrialization and new transportation options all hollowed it out. It’s a deeply eerie and unsettling place to look around,” that same commenter shared.
“Was not at all how Mark Twain described it…” added another fellow Cairo hater.
5. Branson, MO
“I’ve never seen so many terrible carnival attractions and terrible restaurants,” a disgruntled traveler shared.
“Ah, the Myrtle Beach of the Midwest,” said someone else.
6. Nashville, TN
“Every damn bar is the same, the woo girls are obnoxious, and there is absolutely no personality outside of those two things,” one comment read.
“Everyone’s like ‘Oh it’s not what you think it is! There’s something for everyone!’ Yeah, no. It’s exactly what I thought it would be. Maybe even worse,” read another Nashville-hating comment.
7. Jackson MS
“Jackson was the only place where I was unable to find a single redeeming quality or anything to do on my very little time off,” said one commenter.
“I’ve traveled all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, and India, but never felt as unsafe as I did in Jackson MS. That city just has a bad vibe to it, like some terrible s*** could happen at any moment,” someone else added.
8. Rock Springs, WY
“I stayed in Rock Springs once. When I asked the attractive woman who was warm and flirtatious what there was to do in Rock Springs, she said, ‘Well we have the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country,’” shared a traveler.
“I second this one. Rock Bottom, WY,” read another comment.
9. Sioux City, IA
“The stench was unbearable,” wrote one commenter.
Another person called it, “sewer city.”
10. Phoenix, AZ
“I hated everything about it. I liked Tucson much better,” read a comment.
“Judging by the average temperature during summer, trying desperately to stay alive is what they’re doing there,” mocked someone else.
