Victoria Beckham is opening up about why she agreed to make a documentary — and it involves the beloved Spice Girls.

“I’ve been defined by a four-year period in my life. That was the Spice Girls,” Beckham, 51, told The Sunday Times in an interview published on Saturday, October 4. “It’s taken me almost two decades to fight that and I feel that only now can I look back and talk about it. I’m not going to lie, being asked questions about when I was in the Spice Girls was quite triggering. And I’d say those were the most difficult moments. It was almost like therapy for me.”

Beckham (known as Posh Spice) rose to fame in the ‘90s alongside Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice). The girl group went on to take an indefinite hiatus in 2000 before later reuniting for a world tour and for a performance at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

“I love the Spice Girls,” she said. “I really do. And it’s been great reflecting on that time. The other night I had dinner with Emma and Geri, and Mel B messaged me at the weekend. I still speak to all of the girls. I’m so proud of everything we did. I wouldn’t have been who I am now if it wasn’t for the Spice Girls, 100 percent.”

The outlet reported that the Netflix documentary, Victoria Beckham, will focus more on her fashion journey rather than her music career. At the time of the interview, Beckham shared that she hadn’t seen the final edit of the series but teased that no topics were off-limits.

“I mean, I touch on my family, I touch on the Spice Girls, the problems we’ve had with the business, you know, the money we’ve lost — there have been lots of triggers,” she explained. “I cried. Like I said, I haven’t seen the final edit, but yes, I did cry. It takes quite a lot to make me cry, but I did cry. You know, I’ve earned my place to show in Paris, I’ve earned the respect.”

When asked about her “biggest hurdle,” Beckham replied, “That I was just a celebrity brand. But the difference is I wanted to learn the industry, not just throw out something that might promise a return. I wanted to understand and learn my trade. I haven’t talked before about the struggles that the business has been through. We’ve all seen the headlines, but this is the first time I also talk a lot about the business journey and how it hasn’t all been easy.”

Victoria, who is married to legendary soccer star David Beckham, gushed that the couple are “really close to the kids.” (Victoria and David share sons Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 23, and Cruz, 20, and daughter Harper, 14.)

“Harper’s still 14, so she’s living at home. So is Cruz, who is 20. I see both of them every day. Romeo doesn’t live at home, so I see a little less of him,” Victoria shared.

The outlet reported that questions surrounding “speculation about a fall-out with their eldest son, Brooklyn,” would not be answered in the interview with Victoria.

The family has been at odds since David’s 50th birthday party in May, which Brooklyn and wife Nicola Peltz were absent from. A source exclusively told Us Weekly that the couple largely avoided the event to not interact with Romeo’s then-girlfriend, Kim Turnbull.

Victoria Beckham premieres on Netflix Thursday, October 9.
