Blue Bloods fans are hoping to see Vanessa Ray reprise her role on Boston Blue — but what about an Eddie-focused spinoff?
During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Ray, 44, calls a Boston Blue cameo “definitely in the realm of possibility,” adding, “I don’t know how it would work. I don’t know if they would bring back [Will Estes‘] Jamie and Eddie to come and visit Danny or something.”
Ray confirmed that Donnie Wahlberg has been in contact since getting his own show.
“Donnie has been very kind and reached out a number of times. He’s like, ‘We’re having you back on the show. Don’t worry.’ I’m like, ‘I’m not worried. It’s OK if it doesn’t make sense for me to be on the show.’ I’m happy to see whatever else comes my way,” she noted. “I’ve been really fortunate to be a part of these two big franchises [Blue Bloods and Pretty Little Liars] that have such loyal fans, great writing and have given me the chance to play two very interesting and fun characters.”
Ray continued: “If I get to dip my toe back to play them ever again, I will be so happy. But also I just hope that whatever I get to do next lives up to the Pretty Little Liars and the Blue Bloods hype of it all [with] the fandom.”
Blue Bloods, which premiered in 2010, followed the lives of the Reagan family, many of whom worked for the NYPD under the leadership of NYC police commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). Frank’s father, Henry Reagan (Len Cariou), was also central to the show alongside Frank’s children: daughter Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) and sons Danny (Wahlberg) and Jamie Reagan (Estes).
Ray, for her part, joined as Eddie, who went on to marry Jamie and the fictional couple announced they were expecting their first child in the 2024 series finale. While Ray wasn’t sure how Boston Blue could pave the way for Eddie and Jamie to be in Boston, she didn’t rule out playing the characters in another capacity — perhaps on their own show.
“I would do [a spinoff] in a heartbeat. I have an almost 2-year-old and it was the best gig I’ve ever had. I’m like, ‘Why didn’t I think to have kids when I was shooting that show? It would’ve been so great.’ I obviously love Will Estes and everybody so I would be thrilled to get to go back and do it again,” she told Us. “If we were to do a spinoff of Blue Bloods, ours would be set in Miami or in Hawaii or set somewhere warm. We’ll go and shoot somewhere on a beach. Blue Bloods on the beach. Is that possible?”
Despite her love for the Blue Bloods universe, Ray wouldn’t say no to trying something new.
“I really loved working on Pretty Little Liars. I love the ensemble of being with all these wonderful women,” Ray, who played CeCe Drake on the hit Freeform show, recalled. ”I’m really open to being with a younger cast because I think that some of the work that the younger actors are doing right now is blowing my mind. It is gorgeous work and I just want to be with a great ensemble of people doing great things.”
She quipped: “Anything but a medical drama because I just am not good with the medical vernacular. I’ll go back into law enforcement or something legal. That would be great.”
