A United Airlines flight carrying more than 200 people was forced to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport early Tuesday, authorities said.

Flight 1544 took off from the New Jersey airport just before 6 a.m. but turned back about an hour into the flight after suffering a mechanical problem, according to the airline.

The Boeing 757-200, carrying 176 passengers and six crew members, was en route to Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport at the time, flight tracking data show.

“United flight 1544 to Las Vegas returned to Newark Liberty International Airport to address a possible mechanical issue,” a United spokesperson said in a statement.

“The flight landed safely, and all passengers deplaned normally at the gate.”

“We have arranged for a different aircraft to take our customers to Las Vegas this morning.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what issue led to the emergency landing.
