Transgender athletes have stripped women and girls of nearly 2,300 gold medals and more than $500,000 in prize money over the past four decades, according to an analysis from a conservative think tank.
Athletes competing in sports events that don’t match their birth sex have bumped biological women out of championship spots 2,293 times since the mid-1980s, according to the evangelical-leaning public policy non-profit, Concerned Women for America.
“Biological men have distinct advantages over biological women. This reality not only puts women in harm’s way, but it eliminates opportunities for biological women to earn a living and win competitions,” Penny Nance, CEO and President, Concerned Women for America LAC said in a press release.
“How many more women and girls will be subjected to an uneven playing field? It’s time to put an end to this inherent unfairness and protect women’s sports.”
The group also found that trans athletes, who were born “male,” have “stolen” $501,498 in prize money from women and girls in professional sports.
For the report , the think tank analyzed data from a HeCheated.org, a volunteer-run online database that documents instances of trans women athletes participating in female sports events.
In total, it reportedly found they have competed in more than 14,301 female sporting events, including amateur and professional.
Concerned Women for America called on Congress to pass the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which would ban transgender women athletes from playing on female sports teams at schools across the country.
The legislation narrowly passed the House in January 2025, but stalled in the Senate.
The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing, “Standing Up for Women in Sports: Ensuring Opportunity, Fairness and Safety for Female Athletes,” to discuss the topic on Wednesday.
The debate about trans athletes competing in women’s sports stirred up controversy in July when Sophie Cunningham, of the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, proclaimed that women “shouldn’t have to go against biological men” on the court.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” Cunningham told ESPN in an interview.
“I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men,” she said.
High school long jumper AB Hernandez also sparked outrage in May after the trans teen, who was born male, dominated multiple girls track and field events at a California regional event.
Outside the track meet at Yorba Linda High School, demonstrators gathered for a “Save Girls’ Sports” rally led by former NCAA athlete Sophia Lorey.
One protester angrily accused California Gov. Gavin Newsom of abandoning female athletes, shouting that “girls are being threatened.”
