They’re wedging their way back into our hearts.
Millennials can kick, scream and stomp all they want. But sneaker wedges — those bulky, angular eyesores once beloved and worn by celebs like Beyoncé, Lindsay Lohan and Jennifer Lopez in the 2010s — are “in” again, per new data.
And many aren’t happy about it.
“The wedge sneaker — led by continued interest in Isabel Marant’s Bekett style — is the latest shoe to capitalize on a Y2K-fueled TikTok revival,” researchers for Lyst, a global shopping platform, revealed in a recent report, citing a 630% increase in demand for the archaic kicks.
The haute, heeled must-haves even ranked No. 8 on Lyst’s top 10 “world’s hottest products,” joining the Skims tank top and Prada’s collapse re-nylon and suede sneakers.
And the numbers don’t lie.
The glamor gals of Gen Z and Gen Alpha are going gaga over the exhumed hot commodities, which debuted in 2011, courtesy of French designer Isabel Marant.
From trendsetting nepo babies like Kim Kardashian and Kanye’s daughter, North West, to everyday divas online, the comfy, chic shoes — meant to add a splash of leg-lengthening “elegance” to an otherwise casual look — are reclaiming their seat atop the en vogue heap.
But fashionistas over age 30, who survived the faddish footwear’s initial craze, aren’t celebrating the resurrection with a giddy heel-click.
“Don’t bring these shoes back,” cried a crestfallen content creator, “Wedge sneakers are so ugly…the worst shoes in the world.”
“They’re god awful,” moaned a fellow millennial in agreement.
“I think we’re too close to the 2010s to find anything from that era cute.”
But it seems Marant’s wedge sneaker, which ranges in price from $190 to $890, depending on style, is here, again, to stay.
“The sneaker wedges are back,” announced a diehard digital fan, “you can either get with it or get over it.”
“Nahhhhh these HIT. You just gotta be a TRUE baddie to rock these,” quipped another wedge sneaker lover.
“Nah they’re still cute,” argued someone else.
“But they make me look taller as a petite girl,” another young fashionista agreed.
