The Pitt creator R. Scott Gemmill weighed in on how long he envisions the hit show will run following multiple cast exits.

“Probably as long as people want to keep watching,” Gemmill exclusively told Us at Warner Bros. Television Group’s 78th Primetime Emmy Awards Nominees Celebration on Sunday, September 13, of how long the HBO series could hypothetically last. “I think we really enjoy what we do.”

He continued, “I think part of our jobs is to keep a show on the air as long as possible for the people whose livelihoods depend on it — and as long as we’re having fun and people are enjoying watching it, we’ll do it forever.”

While teasing season 3, Gemmill hinted at a few series changes.

“It just gets harder to really keep the stories and the momentum going at that level that we established,” he noted. “We come back every year really quickly so it’s a lot of work.”

Gemmill also promised “lots of surprises,” telling Us, “Everyone will have a surprise. Yeah, everyone is going through some stuff for sure.”

The medical drama, which premiered in January 2025, highlights the highs and lows of working in emergency medicine with an unconventional approach — 15 episodes that showcase 15 hours of a single shift, one hour per episode..

As a result, The Pitt managed to bring back weekly appointment viewing at a time where on-demand streaming is king and while simultaneously marking Noah Wyle‘s second successful medical series after ER.

After introducing viewers to a variety of characters, The Pitt earned some strong feedback from fans following Tracy Ifeachor‘s exit after season 1. The response got even louder when news broke in March that Supriya Ganesh‘s character would be written out of the show after season 2.

“Emergency rooms have a high revolving door,” Wyle, 55, told Variety in April 2026 of the cast exits, arguing actors leaving the series as new join is representative of the health care industry. “As always, we try to bring in new characters or promote from within as we go through these cast changes and try to keep the story lines fresh.”

Wyle, who plays Dr. Robby, didn’t rule out the possibility of the show experiencing additional departures before t filming season 3, adding, “It’s an inevitability that’s going to happen every season with this show, because as writers we’re hard-pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically.”

Gemmill, however, hinted that The Pitt wasn’t prioritizing cast shakeups.

“No, not necessarily,” he added. “I think it depends on what kind of stories we’re telling and what makes the most sense for the show.”

He concluded, “I think [the strong offscreen reaction] is a good sign. It means we’ve created characters that they feel passionate about, and between the writers and the directors and the actors themselves, I mean that what our goal is ultimately. ”

The Pitt is currently streaming on HBO Max.
