Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell may have played onscreen enemies-to-lovers, but they are nothing but close friends IRL.
The actors starred alongside each other in the 2023 rom-com Anyone But You, sparking romance rumors during the film’s press tour thanks to their obvious chemistry. Not long after photos of them cozying up in bathing suits while filming a scene went viral online, Powell and his ex Gigi Paris split after three years of dating in April 2023.
Sweeney, for her part, has been engaged to Jonathan Davino since 2022, and has kept her romantic relationship out of the public eye. Despite what fans thought about Sweeney and Powell, a source told Us Weekly that the costars were nothing but professional when filming Anyone But You.
“It was an open secret they’d gotten really close,” the insider revealed in May 2023, noting that the affair rumors were “a nightmare scenario” for Sweeney.
Months later, the Euphoria actress addressed the rumors head on, saying that she and Powell “don’t really care” what people think. “We talk all the time like, ‘That’s really funny,’” she told Variety in August 2023.
Their friendship made headlines again when Paris broke her silence in June 2025.
“I just wanted respect, especially if it’s gonna be public,” she shared on the “Too Much” podcast. “Like, don’t make an ass out of me. Like, just don’t make a fool out of someone you’ve been with for over three years talking about forever with. Just have some decency, you know?”
Paris continued: “And at the end of the day, it was like, well, work comes first. And if that’s the case, power to you, that’s your priority. I gotta walk away. What sucked was how it was handled. I felt like I was just fed to the dogs.”

“The whole experience was absolutely incredible,” Sweeney gushed at CinemaCon about the shoot. “It was so much fun.”

A source told Us that Sweeney “takes her reputation extremely seriously,” explaining that the affair speculation affected her relationship with Davino.
“She takes her reputation extremely seriously,” the insider added. “This is without a doubt a huge test of their relationship.”
August 2023
“It’s a rom-com. That’s what people want! Glen and I don’t really care,” Sweeney told Variety of the pair’s chemistry while breaking her silence on the affair rumors. “We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much; he’s such a hard worker, and I’m a hard worker.”

Sweeney celebrated Powell’s 35th birthday, posting a tribute to the actor on Instagram.
“Happy birthday to my fellow camp counselor, adventure extraordinaire, and goof ball,” she wrote at the time.
November 2023
Powell addressed his “alleged affair”with Sweeney in his Men’s Health cover story.
“When all that stuff happened, you know, publicly, it felt disorienting and unfair. But what I’m realizing is that’s just a part of this gig now,” he said.
When Powell posted photos from the steamy shoot via Instagram, Sweeney was quick to comment. “Just heating up everybody’s winter huh?” she wrote.
December 2023
Powell opened up about how it was “very easy” for him to “pretend” he was falling in love with Sweeney while filming Anyone But You.
“A great rom-com doesn’t survive without great chemistry, and Sydney is the easiest person to have chemistry with,” he explained to Entertainment Tonight. “I mean, immediately, it was like we’d known each other forever, and I think anybody that’s been on the set realizes I never get tired of talking to Sydney.”
In addition to laughing off romance rumors during an appearance on Today, Powell gave Sweeney “all the credit” for sparking dating speculation in an interview with Business Insider. “I don’t have the mental capacity to pull anything like this off, but she’s very smart. She’s very smart,” he quipped. “And look, Sydney and I do have authentic chemistry.”
March 2024
Sweeney poked fun at her and Powell’s affair rumors during her Saturday Night Live hosting monologue. “Me and my fiancé produced the movie together and he was there the entire shoot. I just want to let everyone know that he’s the man of my dreams and we’re still together and stronger than ever,” she stated.
Asking the camera to “cut to him,” the camera turned to show Powell sitting in the front row. “That’s not my fiancé! He’s in my dressing room!” she exclaimed.
Powell made another cameo during a sketch in which Sweeney’s character admitted to cheating on her boyfriend with her boss.
March 2025
Sweeney traveled to Dallas, Texas, for Glen’s younger sister Leslie Powell’s wedding weekend, during which she was spotted hanging out with her former costar at a local restaurant. The wedding festivities came less than a week after a source exclusively told Us that Sweeney and Davino “called off” their spring 2025 wedding plans.
Another source, however, clarified to Us that Sweeney and Glen remained friends despite her love life troubles. “There is nothing going on romantically between Glen and Sydney. They are just friends,” the insider explained. “Sydney is close with the entire family.”
The source added that Sweeney has “been close friends for a long time” with Leslie and that she “brought one of her girlfriends to the wedding as a guest and she RSVP’d months ago.”

Without naming them, Paris called out Sweeney and Glen, adding, “Where are you when you just need to stand up and say, ‘No, I would never cheat on my girlfriend. I wouldn’t do that.’ That’s all that needed to be said. And that wasn’t said. Never once. It was serving them for their PR. Later on, it turned out that it was all, I don’t know if there was a relationship there or not, but then they came out to say it was all a PR scheme at the expense of our relationship. Like, it was just crazy.”
