Human remains were found inside a suitcase that was floating in the East River near Governor’s Island on Wednesday evening, according to cops and law enforcement sources.
A passing vessel spotted the suitcase and alerted police before an NYPD Harbor Unit was dispatched at around 5:30 p.m., cops said.
Police opened the luggage and made the stomach-churning discovery. The Harbor Unit then took the bag back to shore, the NYPD said.
EMS and medical examiner staff met with police at Pier 16 for further probing.
It’s unclear how long the suitcase was drifting in the water and more information was not immediately available with the case in the early stages.
