Move over, mama, because soon-to-be grandmas want to get in on the baby celebrations by having a “grandma baby shower.”
Yes, you read that correctly.
It’s the same concept of a baby shower, but instead of the pregnant mom being the guest of honor — the grandmother is.
The trend has taken over social media, but before you roll your eyes at the thought of this celebration, since many of these types of parties have gotten a bit out of hand these days, there could be a good, not as shallow as you think, reason behind it.
One of them is that if a grandmother plans to be the secondary caretaker of a newborn, they, too, might need baby supplies that grandma shower attendees could gift.
Another potential, but obvious, reason is that many grandparents’ lives also change when a precious little bundle of joy comes into the picture, so isn’t that worth celebrating?
And many people on social media seem to fully support this new concept.
“My mom’s coworkers threw her one for her 1st grandbaby. I thought it was cute,” wrote one mom.
“My job did a nice collection for me as a grandma. I was really so surprised,” commented an experienced grandma.
Aside from grandmas — expecting dads are also jumping on the shower bandwagon, with some being thrown parties since they, too, go through a transition period when becoming a new parent.
In an Instagram video shared by @themelaninatedmomma, the soon-to-be mom showed a mountain of baby supplies, including diapers, wipes and baby gifts in her living room.
The supplies came from a surprise baby shower that her husband’s co-workers threw for him.
Her caption summed it all up: “Walking downstairs to see this still overwhelms me with emotion.”
Regardless of whether you think men deserve to be showered the same way pregnant women are — the thoughtful gesture is beneficial for both parents, and many onlookers in the video’s comment section agree.
“My husband’s coworkers did this when I was pregnant. He came home all kinds of excited – mainly women, one made a cake, another did an amazing gift basket full of necessities. I will never forget how they included him in the baby excitement too!”
