Priscilla Presley compared her family to the Kennedys for one specific reason in her upcoming memoir, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis, set to be released next month.
“You say at the end of the book that people think that the Presleys are like the Kennedys in that they’ve had to bury their children,” Australian radio host Amanda Keller shared during Priscilla’s Tuesday, August 26, appearance on “JAM Nation With Jonesy & Amanda.”
Keller wondered whether Priscilla, 80, feels like her life is “tragic at times” because of this. (The late Jackie Kennedy Onassis and John F. Kennedy lost three of their children.)
“At times,” Priscilla said. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’ve had great times, but you know, the ending is not so great.”
Priscilla noted that she’s thankful for all the “memories” she has, especially with late husband Elvis Presley.
“I do have my days, there’s no doubt. I don’t know how that stops,” she continued. “I’m reminded pretty much every day. I go and hear Elvis’ music, meaning if I go somewhere people think it’s funny to put the music on.”
She added, “[His voice] just brings me right back to my life back then.”
Priscilla said she’s “coping” with the loss of Elvis and her daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.
“I have a son and I have to think about him and make sure he’s OK,” she added. “That’s pretty much where my life is right now.”
Priscilla is referring to her son, Navarone, 38, whom she shares with Marco Garibaldi.
Priscilla was married to Elvis from 1967 to 1973. The legendary singer died years later in 1977 at age 42. The former couple shared one daughter, Lisa Marie, who died at age 54 in January 2023.
“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla shared in a statement following Lisa Marie’s death. “She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”
Lisa Marie’s death came nearly three years after her son, Benjamin Keough, died by suidice at age 27 in July 2020.
“These are some of the darkest days of my family’s life. The shock of losing Ben has been devastating,” Priscilla wrote in a social media statement at the time. “Trying to put all the pieces together of all the possible whys has penetrated my soul. Each day I wake up I pray it will get better.”
