They’re putting the squeeze on squishies.
It’s not just burns that people have to worry about. A popular toy has been recalled due to fears over serious injury risks posed by its contents, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission reported.
The affected products include the Squeezy Dumplings from GIHNJSI and Rainbow Mystery Squishy Buns from OKK Trading. Both contain water beads, which, if eaten, can expand within the child’s belly, causing choking, intestinal blockage, severe discomfort, and even the “risk of death,” the CPSC warned.
The recall affected approximately 8,000 of the Squeezy Dumplings, which were hawked on Amazon in May and June, per the recall notice. These gelatinous squeezables are known for their round, squishy shape, glitter-like contents, cartoon faces, and a package modeled after a bamboo steamer that reads “SQUEEZY DUMPLINGS” and “SQUEEZE ME.”
Meanwhile, over 7,200 Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun Toys, which were sold at third-party stores throughout the U.S. from May through August of this year, were also subject to the recall.
They boast a similar design to the Squeezy Dumplings, complete with glitter, faces and identical steamer containers, but their label reads “Rainbow MYSTERY” and “SUGAR EDITION.”
While no injuries have been reported from the toys, the CPSC advises customers in possession of them to write “RECALLED” in permanent marker on both the toy and its container and disposing of them
They should then send pics of defective Squeezy Dumplings to [email protected], while Squisy Bun pics should be emailed to [email protected], whereupon they’ll be refunded in full.
The CPSC has also warned customers to toss Squishy Bun Toys from Ivyapingdianpu as they harbor water beads that violate mandatory safety standards.
Despite receiving a Notice of Violation, CPSC said the company has not agreed to a recall or to offer reimbursement for the dumpling-shaped playthings, which also harbor glitter-like particles, a cartoon face, and a faux steamer labeled “SQUISHY BUN” and “Rainbow MYSTERY.”
There are reportedly 100 of these tainted toys, which were hawked on Amazon in June as well as other vendors.
In the event of an injury or other toy defect, the agency urges affected customers to report the product to the CPSC.
The warnings follow a rash of instances involving customers getting burned by exploding squishy toys
While some incidents involved squishies that had been microwaved as part of a TikTok challenge, others had simply been left in the sun.
Over the summer, a West Virginia teen had to be hospitalized after getting scalded by a squishy toy — akin to the viral mystery dumplings or NeeDoh cubes — that had been mistakenly left in a hot car.
The vehicle had inadvertently acted like a solar oven, causing the squishy toy to heat, weaken and expand.
When the teen hopped in the back seat, the gel bubble burst, showering her legs with molten silicone.
