There are some unspoken rules regarding plane etiquette — especially when it comes to putting things in the overhead bins.
One plane passenger took it upon themselves to remove someone’s shoes from the overhead bin space to make room for their luggage — then they turned to Reddit to ask if they were selfish or justified.
In the r/AmItheAsshole forum on Reddit, the passenger who flew “on a short distance flight with a low cost airline company” shared — which has since been deleted — more details about what happened.
“This specific company guarantees cabin space when you book a certain seat and it’s not too expensive,” the original poster wrote, being quick to mention that it was an early flight and they were hungover.
“When I got on the plane all the front cabin spaces were taken, I kept searching for a place next to my seat 2A but my suitcase wouldn’t fit,” the post read.
The original poster was feeling what most flyers have felt when overhead space is limited for their carry-ons — annoyed and frustrated.
“I admit that I was getting more and more frustrated when walking down the aisle looking for a space and also a bit pressured because there was a line forming behind me.”
“I finally came up in row 8 where I found a space that was filled with 2 pairs of shoes,” the OP explained. “We all know the rules, cabin luggage goes in the cabin and anything else goes under the seat.”
As genius as this idea might have sounded — it didn’t take long for the owner of the shoes to say something.
“Finally, someone two rows above speaks up. I then ask if he could take them out and they respond with: ‘do you work for the company/ are you the flight attendant.’ I chose not to answer this and took the shoes out to put my suitcase,” they wrote.
A flight attendant overhead and asked if either passenger needed help — to which they replied no.
Of course, the owner of the shoes had to get even — so they retaliated by hiding the other flyer’s bag.
“…I couldn’t find my bag — he had thrown it and hidden it in some row (not sure how because I was sleeping) this nice couple showed me where it was. I started yelling a bit telling him that he was a child and that shoes belonged in the floor.”
Sheesh.
The comment section on the post was filled with mixed opinions on the situation.
“The shoes shouldn’t be in the overheard bin (Ew!). What kind of barbarian is on the plane in sock feet and uses the luggage bin for shoes? You shouldn’t have touched the shoes, but had the flight attendant do so,” wrote one user.
“Understandable that you were feeling pressured and impatient, but you should have waited anyway. Tossing them was really bad form. Shoe owner should NOT have touched your bag –that was totally unnecessary. Just petty and childish. There’s no excuse for that,” that same commenter continued.
“…You should have contacted the flight attendant right away. Then only the other guy would have looked like TA but now you both do,” pointed out someone else.
“I’m gonna go against the grain here. NTA. All of this could have been avoided if the other guy followed the rules. Not only that, but it shouldn’t have needed a flight attendant’s intervention, he had the opportunity to move the shoes a second time when you asked whose they were and instead he was obstinate. It’s not your fault this guy was clueless. He deserved to have his stuff moved,” read another comment.
