Patriotic LA gas station draws lines with stunning fuel price chop

A new Los Angeles gas station has been drawing crowds by offering steep discounts — as car-bound Southern Californians look for ways to fight back against the fiendish cost of a fill-up.

The newly-opened, very patriotic Stars and Stripes gas station in Studio City has been running a special opening promotion — going as low as a head-turning $4.99 per gallon for regular gas.

That’s far below the current Los Angeles County average of $6.09, according to AAA.

Based in San Diego, Stars and Stripes, which runs both gas stations and convenience stores, now has fifteen locations across Southern California.

“We’re not here to gouge, we’re here to give the people what they need,” Calvin Kalasho, whose family owns the growing chain, told CBS LA.

In classic Los Angeles fashion, the price couldn’t keep from soaring for long.

As of Wednesday morning, regular gas at the station was listed at $5.29, with mid-grade at $5.70, premium at $6, and diesel at $8.

The California Post was unable to reach Stars and Stripes for an update on the promotion.

Californians are currently paying an average of more than $6 per gallon of regular — up 14 cents from last week and $1.36 from a year ago.

Diesel prices in California hit record numbers last week — rising so high that they reached the maximum pump price of $9.99 a gallon.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for the crowdsourcing platform GasBuddy, revealed on Sep. 10 that five California gas stations had diesel prices advertised at their absolute limit.

“Not every day are new all-time records set, and this will be a particularly painful one for the economy that may not even be immediately felt, but record diesel prices will impact every cargo, shipment, every delivery Americans are taking, and are likely to reignite inflation up and down the supply chain,” De Haan said.

“And for now, it comes at a time of year when diesel prices also traditionally rise, adding more pain. I suggest Americans anticipate a costlier holiday season, as it appears diesel prices could continue climbing as geopolitical tensions continue to remain a main factor.”
