A South New Jersey Catholic school teacher has been placed on leave after disclosing to her principal that she was carrying a couple’s surrogate baby, according to reports.

Jadira Bonilla, 35, was placed on paid leave from St. Mary School in Vineland on Sept. 12 for reportedly violating her employment contract and the school’s “educational principles,” according to NJ.com.

“I’m not committing a crime, and I’m being punished as if I was, it’s hurtful,” Bonilla, a kindergarten teacher at the school for over three years, told the outlet.

“What I’m doing is to help a family out,” she said.

The school’s principal, Steven Hogan, called Bonilla, 35, a “valued” teacher, but maintained that the Catholic church’s stance on surrogacy is what “guides our educational principles” in a statement to the outlet.

The Catholic Church has long stood against surrogacy, citing it as contradictory to the unity of marriage. Pope Francis has even previously referred to surrogacy as a “despicable” practice.

Despite the church’s opposition, Bonilla said the school failed to mention surrogacy or in vitro fertilization in her contract or employee handbook

“I didn’t think it was a big deal, being as though I was a surrogate before at a different Catholic school,” Bonilla said, calling Hogan’s response to her announcement of her surrogacy plans last year “judgmental.”

During the meeting, Hogan reportedly told Bonilla she could not work at St Mary School while carrying another couple’s baby, but did not give any written documentation of the decision upon Bonilla’s request.

So, the giving teacher decided to proceed with a couple who offered her a surrogacy contract, the outlet reported.

On Sept 12, over a week after she told the principal she was pregnant as a surrogate, she was called into a meeting with officials from the Diocese of Camden who informed her that she was “possibly” violating her contract and would be put on leave pending an “investigation,” she recalled.

“I was upset…I truly love my job. I love working with my students. I miss being in the classroom.” Bonilla said.

“We certainly understand Mrs. Bonilla’s concern. It has been our hope to meet with her to help her fully understand the Catholic Church’s teaching on surrogacy, but that has not happened as of yet,” Principal Hogan continued in a statement.

“Mrs. Bonilla is a valued teacher and one we hope will one day again teach in our school with the full knowledge of our faith, which guides our educational principles,” he said.

A New Jersey Catholic teacher was previously removed from a classroom after informing administrators she was pregnant.

The state Supreme Court ruled in 2023 that religious entities do not have to abide by discrimination laws when following their faith, meaning Kenilworth Catholic school was legally allowed to fire a woman for disclosing she was unmarried and pregnant, the outlet reported.

The decision ended a 10-year-long legal battle.

Bonilla, who was inspired to become a surrogate after learning her cousin could not medically carry a child, has received an outpouring of support from many parents at the school.

She is now 25 weeks pregnant with a couple’s child, whom she’s already carried another baby for.

“I’ve just received an immense outpour of love and support from so many people,” Bonilla said.

St. Mary School did not respond to The Post’s request for comment at the time of publication.
