Netflix revealed the first look at Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen as JonBenét Ramsey‘s parents for its upcoming limited series about the 6-year-old’s unsolved 1996 murder.
The streaming service released a photo from The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey on Tuesday, September 15, showing John (Owen) and Patsy Ramsey (McCarthy) at a press conference. The upcoming eight-episode limited series will cover the Ramsey family before and after JonBenét’s 1996 murder.
The series was originally titled Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey.
“At the heart of the series, it is the story of Patsy and John Ramsey,” read a September 2024 press release. “Exploring the unbreakable partnership of these two complex people — as husband and wife, as mother and father — who had committed themselves and their children to building the narrative of a perfect, privileged life only to have it destroyed one Christmas night in 1996.”
The series also stars Emily Mitchell (JonBenét), Angus Caldwell (Burke Ramsey), Garrett Hedlund (Detective Steve Thomas), Alison Pill (Detective Linda Arndt), Owen Teague (fictional character Shane Edwards), Shea Whigham (District Attorney Alex Hunter) and Will Patton (Detective Lou Smit).
During an exclusive interview with Us, Hedlund, 42, teased the work that went into the show, sharing in September 2025, “I’ve seen everything that everyone has seen and I’ve read just a little bit more.”
Hedlund noted that everyone involved in the series “worked really hard” to honor JonBenét.
“But the whole thing is, it’s such a tragic story that it’s all based on,” he continued. “We had a wonderful writer, so they really did their work. All I can say is everybody put their blood, sweat and tears into this one.”
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey was greenlit in March 2024 and officially picked up by Paramount+ that September before Skydance Global acquired Paramount Global. As a result, new leadership reviewed the series and had concerns.
Deadline previously reported that a defamation lawsuit previously filed against CBS by JonBenét’s brother, Burke, in 2016 could have played a role. (The lawsuit, which came after a CBS docuseries theorized Burke had killed his sister, was settled in 2019.)
Amid the evaluation, 101 Studios closed a deal in late October 2025 to move from Paramount to NBCUniversal at the start of 2026. The production company then took its limited series and started shopping it, which is how it was acquired by Netflix.
“The series centers on one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history, and the devastating personal and public reckoning that followed the death of JonBenet Ramsey on Christmas night in 1996,” read the official synopsis.
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey will be released on December 10.
