WASHINGTON — It’s only Wednesday.
Tensions between firebrand Rep. Nancy Mace and “Squad” Rep. Ilhan Omar exploded into an epic war of words, the two neighboring congresswomen firing off petty insults and accusing each other of insanity.
Mace (R-SC), who has championed legislation to censure Omar (D-Minn.) and strip her of committee assignments due to the latter’s cruel rant about Charlie Kirk, mused that Somalia can take the “Squad” rep back.
“Ilhan Omar said it herself: actions have consequences. Time to live by it,” Mace swiped on X. “We’ve filed a resolution to censure her and strip her committee assignments. If you celebrate murder, maybe Somalia can take you back.”
The South Carolina Republican, who is running for governor, began the day on an antagonistic note with another post by wishing “Good morning to everyone who doesn’t celebrate political assassinations and murder.”
The posting was an oblique reference to Omar reposting a video that said “Kirk was Doctor Frankenstein, and his monster shot him through the neck,” among other incendiary attacks on the late conservative icon.
As of Wednesday at press time, the repost remained on Omar’s X account.
While Omar did state on X that “my heart breaks for his wife and children” and “I don’t wish violence on anyone” after Kirk’s assassination, she also attacked the Turning Point USA founder’s character during an interview on Zeteo.
“There is nothing more f—ed up than to pretend that his words and actions haven’t been recorded and in existence for the last decade or so,” she said on the day Kirk was killed, accusing him of posting “hateful rhetoric” on social media.
Mace’s censure resolution specifically references a TikTok video from user “lvworkshop” that seemingly gloated over his demise. Omar has noted that the censure resolution targets her “over comments I never said.”
Omar, who was born in Somalia before her family secured asylum in the US in 1995, also alleged that Mace’s censure push is a ploy to “fundraise and boost her run for governor.”
“I know you aren’t well or smart but I hope someone can explain to you that there isn’t a correlation between my committee assignments and deportation,” Omar shot back on Wednesday morning in response to Mace’s dig about returning to Somalia.
“Regardless of what you do with these committees, my office will continue to be next to you and I will continue to be in Congress.”
“We would love to see you deported back to Somalia next,” Mace shot back.
“Would love to see you get the help you need next. You belong in rehab, not Congress,” Omar responded.
“Coming from someone who calls her brother ‘husband,’ that’s rich,” Mace chided.
That’s a reference to unproven claims that her husband in her first marriage, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, was actually her brother. Omar has strongly denied those accusations.
Mace’s official congressional account also posted, “One-way ticket to Somalia with your name on it, Ilhan Omar.”
“I am going soon, so please drop off the tickets on your way to your office, I am next door. Thanks in advance,” Omar hit back.
Both Mace and Omar have offices on the same floor of the Longworth House Office Building.
A vote on Mace’s censure resolution could come later in the day on Wednesday. Mace had forced a vote on the matter.
The South Carolina Republican also mused about stripping Omar’s citizenship away. She noted that it would take a two-thirds majority in the House to expel Omar.
Omar’s fellow “Squad” Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) was censured by the GOP-led House in late 2023 over inflammatory remarks she made about Israel.
