A Louisiana school’s recent “Teacher of the Year” has been busted for attempted murder for allegedly trying to gun down two people in the street, according to cops.
Middle school teacher Kyle Delaney, 25, was arrested after two men were found with gunshot wounds on Tuesday afternoon in Donaldsonville, about 35 miles south of Baton Rouge, including one who was hit several times, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
“Detectives learned that Delaney arrived at the victims’ location, exited his vehicle and fired multiple shots in their direction before fleeing the scene,” the department said without giving a motive.
Police tracked the teacher down that night to a residence in Gonzales, about 17 miles north of Donaldsonville, and took him into custody.
He is charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, and criminal damage to property. He was still in jail Thursday awaiting arraignment, court records show.
The two shooting victims were not identified, and it was not clear how they were tied to the teacher.
Delaney taught 7th grade social studies at Gonzales Middle School, where he was honored as the 2024-2025 New Teacher of the Year, according to the school’s website.
However, Ascension Public Schools told WAFB Wednesday that he is no longer employed by the district.
“As this is an active law enforcement matter, questions regarding the incident, arrest, or criminal charges should be directed to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, and we are unable to comment further on personnel matters,” a district spokesperson told the outlet.
