Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have made it clear that, for these two, family is everything.
The pair are mom and dad to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Meghan has been outspoken about the many highs and lows she has experienced since becoming a mom, including emotional challenges she’s faced as well as how much she enjoys raising her young kids.
Meghan famously told ITV in 2019 that she was no not feeling OK following the birth of Archie. “Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know? And especially as a woman, it’s a lot,” she said at the time. Her comments sparked an online movement in which women openly shared their postpartum mental and emotional struggles.
Since then, things have improved a lot for Meghan, who continues to be open about the challenges many mothers of young children face.. Here’s a look at some of her most memorable quotes about motherhood:
Working motherhood is a challenge
Meghan and Prince Harry took their son Prince Archie to South Africa as part of the young family’s first royal tour. While speaking at the September 2019 “Ladies Who Launch” event in Cape Town, Meghan told attendees, “Being a working mom and traveling as well with a baby, my goodness, it’s a lot. But it’s all so exciting. There are days when it’s a lot to juggle but then you meet someone and you have an impact on them and you say ‘ah-ha,’ and it’s so rewarding.”
The vulnerability of motherhood
The pair spoke to ITV in a revealing 2019 interview. Meghan told the news station, “Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know? And especially as a woman, it’s a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s, um … yeah, I guess. Also, thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing.”
The realities of pregnancy loss
In November 2020, Meghan revealed in an essay in the New York Times that she suffered a miscarriage in July of the same year. “I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second,” she wrote. “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few.”
Community is a huge part of parenthood
In honor of Mother’s Day in 2021, Meghan wrote a personal letter that was shared by Harvest Home LA on Instagram.
“As a mom, and an expectant mom, I deeply appreciate the significance of community support, safe and accessible pregnancy resources, and trusted guidance in a nurturing setting. These ingredients are essential to not just our physical health, but our mental well-being, and I commend you for leading a compassionate community that lives these values,” Meghan began her letter. “Thank you for all you do for the women and mothers who are turned away elsewhere, at no fault of their own. When we consider how vulnerable any mother feels during the fragile time of pregnancy, we gain perspective about how especially difficult it can be for pregnant women of color and those who come from under-resourced and vulnerable communities. I hope you will accept an offer of support to help further uplift Harvest Home’s residents.”
The importance of paid family leave
While speaking at the DealBook Online Summit in November 2021, Meghan revealed she was calling members of Congress to speak out in support of paid leave for parents.
“This is one of those issues that is not red or blue,” Meghan said at the time. “It sets us up for economic growth and success, but it also just allows people to have that very sacred time as a family.”
The quintessential morning rush
In an episode of her “Archetypes” podcast released in November 2022, Meghan revealed she was in the “thick” of parenting at the time.
“The morning rush … for me, it’s both monitors on for the kids, to hear them,” she said. “Always up with Lili, get her downstairs, then half an hour later, Archie’s up. Start doing his lunchbox right before he’s up while I have [Lili], getting her a little nibble. My husband’s helping me get him downstairs and I make breakfast for all three of them. It’s very important to me. I love doing it.”
On supporting a child’s dreams
In a 2022 interview with Variety, Meghan revealed she is open to her daughter following in her footsteps as an actress.
“I would say, ‘Great!’ When you become a parent, you genuinely want your kids to find the things that bring them complete joy,” she explained. “There are so many people that will talk about what opened the door for my children. But it still takes talent and a lot of grit. We’re creating multidimensional, interesting, kind, creative people. That’s who our kids are.”
Taking in the “beauty” of family
“That man loves me so much. And, you know, look at what we’ve built,” Meghan said of her husband and family during an April 28 appearance on the “Jamie Kern Lima” podcast. “We’ve built a beautiful life and we have two healthy, beautiful children.”
Dangerous postpartum complications
In an April 2025 episode of her podcast “Confessions of a Female Founder,” Meghan revealed she suffered postpartum preeclampsia after giving birth to one of her children.
“And you go … and you’re still trying to juggle all of these things, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly,” Meghan said. “And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people. And in the quiet, you’re still just trying to show up mostly for your children. But those things are huge medical scares.”
