Maria Shriver is offering a major update on her love life.
“Your 60s are fantastic. I was single in my 60s — I have been single my whole 60s. Now, I’m ending my 60s,” Shriver, 69, said during the Friday, June 27, episode of Today With Jenna & Friends. “I loved being single but other people had a big problem with it.”
The conversation surrounding Shriver’s love life came as she and Jenna Bush Hager were discussing Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell’s recent article discussing sex after 60.
“I have to read it, but I could have written it,” Shriver quipped. “It would say, ‘The beginning and the end.’”
Just like Bushnell, 66, Shriver said she was “happily single” throughout the last decade.
“I love being in a couple, but I also loved being single,” Shriver continued. “I’m interested in any great love experience. I’m trying to be open and yes to life in all its forms.”

Her candid answer comes days after Shriver reflected on her “amazing” 60s. (She’s set to turn 70 this November.)
“My 60s were amazing. Nobody told me that,” she said during the Wednesday, June 25, episode. “My favorite decade, probably, to date. I felt empowered. I felt like I was in my zone. I felt I was doing what I wanted to do. I felt everything that I had worked towards hit its speed, so to speak.”
Shriver agreed when Bush Hager,43, said she was focused on herself for the first time in years.
“[I] felt a sense of freedom. A lot of the things you think about: Am I raising my kids well? Am I balancing work and children? If you’re in a marriage, am I partnering well? Are you caring for aging parents?” she continued. “Those were things that were behind me and those are really complicated time-consuming heavy things for millions and millions of people — and that was really behind me.”
Shriver noted that while her 50s were “great too,” it was just different from her 60s.
“That was all behind me in my 60s. I’m excited about turning 70, I have no idea, but my kids tell me that it’s old.”
Shriver shares four children — Katherine, 35, Christina, 33, Patrick, 31, and Christopher, 27 — with ex-husband Arnold Schwarzenegger. The former couple was married for 25 years before she discovered that Schwarzenegger had an affair and filed for divorce in 2011. (Schwarzenegger welcomed a son, Joseph, with Mildred Baena in 1997.)
“I was consumed with grief and wracked with confusion, anger, fear, sadness, and anxiety. I was unsure now of who I was, where I belonged. Honestly, it was brutal, and I was terrified,” Shriver wrote of the infidelity in her book of poems I Am Maria, published earlier this year. “As I sat on my hotel room floor in the dark, alone with tears streaming down my face, I thought to myself: Maria, this doesn’t have to be the end of you.”
