A female Long Island high school student was charged with making a threat of “mass harm” online this week, prompting officers to rush to her campus urgently.
The 18-year-old student at Huntington High School made the concerning post on Snapchat, prompting a tipster to alert Suffolk County officers, who came to the learning facility at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to Patch.
The teen, whose name was not released, has been taken for evaluation and will be arraigned at a later date for making the threat. The exact nature of the treat was not disclosed.
The post ultimately was “non-credible,” according to Beth McCoy, superintendent of Huntington’s school district.
Regardless, she issued a letter to the concerned school community following this incident.
“We understand that situations like this can affect students in various ways. If your child feels the need to talk to someone about this or any other concerns they may have, please reach out to the mental health staff in your child’s building for support,” McCoy wrote.
“Such actions may have serious consequences and can impact our entire school community. Rest assured, the Huntington Union Free School District is committed to working closely with our School Resource Officers and local police to ensure a safe and secure environment for all students and staff.”
