LeBron James and his wife, Savannah James, have often been praised as the epitome of couple goals — but the NBA star admitted marriage isn’t always so easy.
During an interview with Speedy Morman on the “360 with Speedy” podcast on Thursday, September 18, LeBron, 40, was asked about the perception that his relationship with Savannah, 39, is “picture perfect.”
“It’s not, man,” James said. “I’m gonna be honest. A relationship is never picture perfect. But if you’re OK with working through the hardships and the adverse moments, then it will make it all worth it, man. We’ve been together since high school, so s*** ain’t always going to be a bed of roses, man — in any relationship, let alone someone you’ve been living with for 20 years.”
LeBron and Savannah met while attending different high schools in Akron, Ohio. They got married in September 2013 and have welcomed three children: sons LeBron “Bronny” Jr., 20, and Bryce, 18, and daughter Zhuri, 10.
“Communication is No. 1,” LeBron explained. “Being honest is No. 2. No. 3 is just, like, you have to be OK in being uncomfortable in relationships sometimes. You can’t always have it your way. You can’t always think, ‘My way or the highway.’ It’s never going to work that way.”
LeBron continued, “The saying, ‘Happy wife, happy life,’ that s*** is real, bro.”
As for basketball, LeBron admitted he’s “on the other side of the hump” while preparing to enter his 23rd NBA season.
“I’m not about to play another 23 years, that’s for damn sure,” LeBron said. “I’m not about to play another 10. I’m definitely gearing up to where the end is. I’m not there yet. I’m super blessed to be able to sit here in year 23.”
LeBron joked that his newfound infatuation with the game of golf shouldn’t ring any alarm bells about his NBA playing days coming to end in the immediate future.
“Listen guys, every time I pick up something new does not mean retirement,” he said. “It’s like, ‘I’ve seen this motherf***er eating with chopsticks, he’s retiring! Oh, I’ve seen you wear a T-shirt that’s too big, retirement! Oh s*** he picked up golf, retirement!’ It’s just something I want to do. It’s just a little hobby.”
LeBron added, “But retirement is coming. It is coming. But it’s just not here just yet.”
