JoJo Siwa has responded to Miley Cyrus’ recent joke about bringing her “back out” of the closet amid Siwa’s newfound relationship with Chris Hughes.
On Thursday, June 12, the “Karma” singer, 22, shared a carousel of images via Instagram showcasing her lifelong admiration for Cyrus, 32, including a snap from a Cyrus-themed 5th birthday party, along with a lengthy caption addressing Cyrus’ comments in a video message that played at a World Pride event last weekend.
“I was happy at my 5th birthday having a Miley-themed party, and I’m still happy now at 22… If you know me, you know that Miley is my day 1, grew up beyond inspired by her from 2 years old on,” Siwa began her post.
She continued, “I wasn’t sure how I felt about things for a couple of days… but I’ve started to come to some thoughts…. I don’t believe what Miley said at World Pride was ill-intended, honestly, I think it was meant to be a joke, but just not very good one haha. Not what the world, or myself, needs to hear any day of the week.”
The Dance Moms alum said she even reached out to the “Wrecking Ball” singer and shared Cyrus’ response.
“I messaged Miley lightheartedly about it and she replied and said ‘All love. Always . ❤️❤️❤️. 🤍,” Siwa wrote.
The “Boomerang” singer concluded her post by sharing a message of positivity with her 11 million followers amid Pride Month.
“Honestly, the most beautiful thing I’ve learned in the last 5 years is that love is a gorgeous rainbow. Don’t question yourself, don’t second-guess yourself, just love. Love love love love love.❤️,” Siwa wrote. “People judge no matter what, and it can be very hard, especially when it comes from someone you love, and look up to… but if you feel happy and content with yourself, that’s most important. You get one life… hold onto it, make it yours, find your happy, and love.🤍”
Cyrus’ video message to fans attending a World Pride event last weekend recently went viral after she filmed herself inside a closet. At the end of the video, the singer quipped, “I’m going back inside to get more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out.”
Siwa recently went public with her relationship with Hughes, 32, after they met on the U.K. edition of Celebrity Big Brother in April. During her time on the reality show, Siwa said she discovered more about her sexual identity.
“I’ve always told myself I’m a lesbian, but I think you — I think being here, I’ve realized, ‘Oh no, I’m not a lesbian, I’m queer,’” she said on the show. “I think that’s really cool. I’m switching letters.”
Siwa broke up with her then-partner Kath Ebbs after leaving the Big Brother house. The “Karma” singer and Hughes fueled speculation that they were involved romantically after developing a close relationship on the reality show.
On June 1, Hughes shared a selfie via Snapchat showing him and Siwa in bed together. The following day, Siwa confirmed that she and Hughes are dating after initially describing their relationship as “platonic.”
“It’s not platonic anymore, and it’s been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I’m absolutely head over heels for him and he’s the same way,” Siwa, 22, said in an interview with The Guardian published on June 2.
