Italy has launched a series of revamped vintage trains in recent years, and another glamorous locomotive is about to join the fleet.

The enchantingly named Espresso Siena will run between the capital Rome and the art-rich city of Siena, passing through the bucolic landscapes of Tuscany en route.

Passengers will ride in newly restored ‘Gran Confort’ first-class carriages from the 1970s.

If you fancy experiencing a nostalgic journey on the Espresso Siena, you’ll need to book quickly as the route is only running for a limited time this autumn.

Take a slow train from Rome to Siena

Run by national rail companies Fondazione FS and FS Treni Turistici Italiani, the Espresso Siena will take to the tracks at the end of September.

The operator describes it as a “real journey into the soul of Tuscany” and “a unique opportunity to slow down”.

Siena is known for its medieval red brick buildings and fan-shaped central square where annual horse races take place.

Art lovers can marvel at the Gothic mastery of Siena’s Cathedral, while those looking for some enotourism can visit wineries in and around the city for classic Chianti tastings.

The service will only run for three weekends in the autumn. It will travel from Rome to Siena on 27 September, 4 October and 1 November, departing at 7.42pm from Roma Termini station and arriving in Siena at 1.20pm.

There are intermediate stops at Tarquinia, Capalbio, Orbetello, Grosseto, Montepescali, Monte Antico, Buonconvento and Monteroni d’Arbia.

The return journeys from Siena are scheduled for 28 September, 5 October and 2 November so that passengers can stay overnight in the Tuscan city.

Trains will leave Siena at 3.05pm and arrive back in Rome at 9.03pm.

Ride in retro style aboard restored 1970s carriages

Passengers will ride in legendary 1970s first-class carriages, which have been meticulously restored.

As you relax in stylish seats of plush blue velvet, you can admire the countryside from giant panoramic windows. Funky 70s wallpaper clads the carriage partitions and the corridors are panelled in wood.

There is also a bar car with cheerful blue, pink and chrome furnishings.

Prices start from €29 and tickets can be purchased on the Railbook.it website.
