Smash or pass?

One mom thinks it’s absurd for her and her husband to follow his family’s “tradition” and smash their baby’s face into his first birthday cake.

Now she’s turned to Reddit’s infamous AITA forum with a post titled, “AITA for telling Husband no to cake smashing” — hoping for backup as she battles between her husband’s family’s custom versus the comfort of her own kid.

“My husband is really adamant about pushing the baby’s face into the cake. I am super against this,” she wrote.

She worries the tradition could leave her son (who isn’t even 1-year-old yet) sobbing instead of smiling.

Her husband insists it’s part of his Mexican family’s celebrations — but, as she pointed out, “he himself told me he ALWAYS hated it as a kid and it made him angry.”

The mom admits she doesn’t see the humor and says her little boy is especially sensitive after a tough first year.

“I told him if he does do it, I will be angry and that he needs to tell his family that they aren’t allowed to do it themselves either,” she warned.

Commenters piled on in support of the mom, with some calling the tradition downright cruel.

One wrote, “You’re not being a jerk. That’s a garbage tradition. ‘Let’s all humiliate the birthday boy/girl and then point and laugh!’ Tell him that a tradition he himself hated, that does nothing but hurt and embarrass his child, should be left in the past.”

Some offered a broader perspective. “I don’t understand why your husband is so eager to do this if he hated it when it was done to him. As the saying goes, tradition is peer pressure from dead people, and I can’t see why this one is so precious that he’d do what he hated as a child, and anger his wife,” noted one user.

Practical concerns were also raised. “It’s also quite dangerous for a baby. The cake could obstruct his airways, you could damage his neck, or break his nose, even. Babies are fragile,” one commenter warned.

And a few drew the line at respect and safety. “It’s simple… the answer is no […] It’s a ‘respecting boundaries’ issue. If he does it, he doesn’t respect you as the baby’s mother and certainly not as his wife,” a Redditor declared.

From cake-smashing debates to Cinderella spectacles, some dads manage to complicate kids’ birthday parties — whether they mean to or not.

As previously reported by The Post, one Connecticut mom recently went all out for her 4-year-old’s Cinderella party, from custom-embroidered napkins to lace-trimmed table covers and even a grown-up-friendly spread.

But on the big day, her husband’s big question? “Did you get a cake?” — blissfully unaware of her weeks of planning.

Davis caught his naive questions on camera and shared the clip on Instagram, captioning it, “Thanks so much for asking,” sparking a flood of comments from wives laughing (and commiserating) over their own husbands’ cluelessness.
