An Iowa mother is accused of giving a pregnant relative an opioid-laced holiday lasagna in the hopes she would have a miscarriage, according to police.
Amber Snow, a 36-year-old mother, allegedly mixed oxycodone into the pasta dish and delivered it to the pregnant woman’s family just three days after Christmas last year, according to the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office.
The Italian staple was “intended to cause a miscarriage to a pregnancy of a woman in the family that received the lasagna,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The victim’s family alerted authorities in January about the “family size” pan of pasta they believed had been drugged.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation tested the lasagna and confirmed the presence of oxycodone, a schedule II narcotic, according to CBS2 Iowa.
Police discovered evidence of internet searches connected to the crime as well as messages and phone conversations with a suspected co-conspirator. Additional arrests are expected, cops said.
It’s not clear if the pregnant woman ever ate the dish, but the fetus was not harmed, police said, without specifying if the baby has since been born.
Snow shares a minor child with a member of the victim’s family, who was aware that the lasagna was tainted and objected to her mom delivering it, police said.
Police have not disclosed a possible motive for wanting to terminate the unborn child.
