Robert Redford experienced great loss in his family over the years.
The legendary actor, for his part, died at age 89 on Tuesday, September 16, at his home in Utah. Redford’s rep confirmed to The New York Times at the time that the actor had died in his sleep. Details about his cause of death were not immediately revealed.
Redford is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars. The couple met in 1996 and wed more than a decade later in 2009. They didn’t share any children together but Redford was a father of four: two sons, Scott and David, and two daughters, Shauna and Amy, whom he shared with his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen.
“The hardest thing in the world is when your children have problems,” Reford told People during a 1998 interview. “There have been so many hits on our family that no one knows about, and I don’t want them to, for my family’s sake.”
During the same interview, Redford said that fatherhood has been his greatest gift. (The late actor also had seven grandchildren.)
“I’ve made some interesting movies, and I’ve been very satisfied with the work,” he said. “But if someone wrapped it all up and said to me, ‘What’s your greatest achievement?’ I’d say, ‘The children. They’re the best thing in my life.’”
While Scott died shortly after he was born in 1959, David died after a battle with cancer five years before his father’s passing.

Redford met his second wife when she was skiing at his Sundance Mountain Resort in 1996. The couple got married in a small 2009 wedding, taking place in her home country of Germany.
