She’s making shore her late mother gets to sea the sights.
Fulfilling mom Wendy Chadwick’s dying wish, Cara Melia, a 24-year-old, from Oldham, UK, sealed her ashes in a glass bottle along with a handwritten note, reading, “This is my mum. Throw her back in — she’s travelling the world,” and released it into the sea at Skegness Beach in England.
Chadwick, 51, a mother of five, passed away due to an undiagnosed heart condition, per BBC.
But just 12 hours after her remains were committed to the water, the container and touching message drifted ashore on the same sands. A family found and publicly shared Melia’s sweet request with deeply moved well-wishers online.
“We found this lovely lady earlier today at Butlins, Skegness beach,” the woman who spotted Melia’s mom wrote on Facebook, punctuating the post with a few pictures of the discovery.
“She’s been thrown back in the sea as requested,” the woman continued in her digital bulletin, which has garnered over 2,600 likes. “Happy travels Cara’s Mum.”
The happy send-off has left many in tears.
“Beautiful, this made me cry,” a commenter confessed.
“Wow amazing,” said another. “I was teared up when I read this hope the lady travels and travels bless her.”
“This is such a nice idea,” an equally sentimental onlooker typed. “Also hilarious that you’re thanking random people for throwing your mom around.”
But Melia says making her way around the globe was Chadwick’s lifelong dream.
“Life happened and my mom never got a chance to travel,” Melia told BBC Radio Manchester, adding that she didn’t expect her ashes to be retrieved in the same place they were released.
“Nobody was meant to find her for a bit,” Melia said, “She was meant to be in a completely different country.”
The grieving daughter went on to describe Chadwick as a “very quirky kind of person” who “absolutely loved the beach and sun.”
So, she hopes her mom’s next stop is somewhere hot.
“I’d love her to end up on a beach in Barbados or Spain, which would definitely take a while,” said Melia.
As Chadwick reaches new beaches, Melia is grateful to the folks who found her, and for all of the support she’s received from strangers across social media.
“I wasn’t expecting it to go viral and to touch as many people as it has,” she said, noting that her mom would be “giggled” by the attention her special trip is amassing.
