Gov. Gavin Newsom has revealed his pick for Los Angeles mayor — and it’s incumbent Karen Bass, who’s faced heavy criticism for her handling of wildfires last year and to two high-profile challengers.
“I’ve known her for years. we have a great collaborative relationship, she’s has a remarkable career,” Newsom told Peter Hamby of Puck News.
“I believe in her.”
Bass is facing two well-known competitors in her reelection bid — conservative former reality star Spencer Pratt and Democratic Socialist city council member Nithya Raman.
The governor acknowledged he’s had differences with Bass over housing and homelessness policy — Bass strongly opposed SB 79, a law allowing denser housing developments that Newsom championed.
“We can get into some of the merits to merits… and we continue to kick the tires daily” on Los Angeles fire rebuilding efforts,” Newsom said.
“We’ll work those things out, but I broadly do” support Bass, Newsom said.
