Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is set to announce his decision Thursday about whether to allow Erik and Lyle Menendez to be resentenced after serving more than 30 years in prison.

The decision comes after Gascón revealed earlier this month that his office was giving their 1989 murder case a fresh look in light of newly discovered evidence indicating the boys had been sexually abused.

Gascón will announce his decision at a press conference later Thursday afternoon.

The brothers were 18 and 21 when they killed their parents, Kitty and Jose, with shotguns in the family’s Beverly Hills mansion. They were both sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Family members of both Kitty and Jose held a press conference outside the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles with attorney Mark Geragos at which they called for the brothers to be resentenced.

The brothers’ case has received renewed national attention thanks to a popular Netflix series about the case, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
