Explosion destroys LA apartment, leaving two injured, including child

An explosion ripped through an apartment complex in the LA suburb of Bell Gardens Tuesday night, leaving a child and an adult injured and displacing multiple families, according to reports from CBS LA.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department around 6:07 p.m. to a residential building on the 6500 block of Purdy Avenue, where a  violent blast and fire shattered windows and blew out a large portion of the second story.

A child and an adult were transported to local hospitals, with the child listed in stable condition and the adult in critical condition, according to officials.

Fire crews who arrived at the scene reportedly battled the flames, which ensued after the explosion.

Bell Gardens Police Chief Paul Camacho said building inspectors have red-tagged the structure, rendering it unsafe for occupancy. Between four and five families were displaced due to the damage, and the American Red Cross was called in to help, per reports from CBS.

It’s unclear what caused the blast. The LAFD’s arson unit is now on the case and working to determine what sparked the explosion
