Ezra Sosa has a message for Dancing With the Stars fans who didn’t appreciate his season 34 premiere night choreography.
“When I realized I got a higher week 1 score last season,” Sosa, 24, captioned a Wednesday, September 17, TikTok video, joking about “the irony of it all.”
Sosa and Anna Delvey scored an 18 out of 30 for their cha-cha during the fall 2024 kickoff, one week before their elimination. During the Tuesday, September 16, premiere, Sosa and current partner Jordan Chiles earned a 10 out of 20 for their salsa.
Tuesday’s episode only saw Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli judge the performances as Carrie Ann Inaba was out sick. Hough, 40, and Tonioli, 69, also planned to give out lower scores than usual.
“The scoring tonight, just be mindful, it might be a little lower than you’re expecting because there’s a long way to go,” Hough told Sosa and Chiles, 24, after their Beyoncé-soundtracked salsa. “This is a marathon. We want to give you guys room to grow.”
While Sosa understood Hough’s note, several fans flooded his Wednesday TikTok video with requests to give the Olympic gymnast “the choreo she deserves.”
“BB it’s OK,” Sosa replied. “I signed up for this. I appreciate the criticism [and] it makes me better! [I] wanna make you guys proud.”
In addition to Sosa and Chiles, costars Dylan Efron and pro Daniella Karagach also received a pair of 5 scores from the two judges.
“I understood what they were saying, and that’s kind of what I hope to become like,” Efron, 33, exclusively told Us Weekly after Tuesday’s broadcast of the critique to better lead Karagach, 32, on the dance floor. “I think Derek was saying he wants to see me turn into that lead character–type vibe, and that wasn’t what we were going for week one.”
He added, “We wanted to go out there and have fun, so I hope our arc does look like that. … It just felt, like, such a positive night.”
Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
