Couple moves into new home together — husband does the unimaginable with their spare key: ‘That’s controlling’

Expectedly, you won’t always see eye to see with your spouse when it comes to your in-laws — unfortunately, that was the case with one millennial woman who thinks her husband overstepped when he gave his mom the spare key to their new home.

The frustrated wife took to the r/AmIOverreacitng forum on Reddit to share her story — which has since been deleted — and asked fellow users whether she’s in the wrong or not for how she’s feeling about her husband crossing a line.

The 30-year-old OP explained how she and her husband just moved into their new home together. Before deciding on what to do with their spare key, it seems that the woman’s hubby took it upon himself to give it to none other than his mom — without even discussing it first.

Yikes. This sounds like an episode of “Everybody Loves Raymond” waiting to happen.

“His mom is nice, but she’s very… involved. She’s the type to rearrange our kitchen because she thinks it’s ‘better that way,’” she wrote.

As any rational spouse would probably react, the OP told her husband that she didn’t feel comfortable with his mom being able to come over unasked with her key.

Obviously, this mama’s boy didn’t understand where his wife was coming from and called her “dramatic” — and that she was being “overreacting and controlling.”

Those words are enough to raise someone’s blood pressure.

The majority of the 400 comments in the thread of the post agreed with the baffled wife.

“He’s controlling by deciding who gets a key without consulting you. That [is] essentially the same as he put himself in charge. That’s controlling…You might just want to tell him, emergencies are one thing. But if you come home and find she’s been in there for no good reason and/or has moved things or changed something, the locks get changed. A second time, and then you have decisions to make about him,” one person suggested.

“…I’d be packing my stuff and going elsewhere until he gets that key back. Fine, you want to unilaterally decide for both of us, great. I’m out. You aren’t making me small, bending me to your desires or calling me controlling for wanting my privacy respected. This is going to be the rest of your life op, if you allow it to continue,” pointed out another commenter.

“I would tell him that his mother is not allowed to use the keys except in an emergency or if she’s specifically asked to use it. Tell him that if she uses it for any other reason, she loses key privileges. The same rule should apply for anyone who has a key,” someone else said.

And sadly, this isn’t the first — and won’t be the last — scenario where a mother-in-law got a little too involved and went off the rails.

One bride’s soon-to-be mother-in-law practically wore the same exact dress as the bride’s wedding gown.

And on top of that, “She cried LOUDLY the night before our destination wedding about how disappointed she was that her son chose me ‘out of all his options.’ Then proceeded to not sign the guest book or gift us anything, even a card,” the shocked bride wrote in the r/weddingshaming subreddit on Reddit.
