Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty is wrapping up Jenny Han’s book trilogy — but could it return for season 4?
Creator Han didn’t rule out returning to Cousins Beach, telling Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday, June 10, “Never say never. If the story is there, then I’m there. As a storyteller, you just get hit with inspiration all the time.”
Han acknowledged that she doesn’t have a concrete idea just yet. “If I had a really great idea that I was excited by, that I wanted to keep telling the story, and if [the stars] were excited to do it, then I would be so pumped,” she continued. “It really depends on if I feel like there is more story to tell.”
Star Lola Tung also showed her support for a return down the road.
“I love working with this group of people and I love working with Jenny,” she shared with the outlet. “I think it’s such a privilege to be any part of her cinematic universe, so if I was ever asked, I’m there.”
The Summer I Turned Pretty explores a love triangle between Belly (Tung) and the Fisher brothers: Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Season 2, which took inspiration from the second book titled It’s Not Summer Without You, left off with Belly starting a relationship with Jeremiah. Season 3 will presumably bring We’ll Always Have Summer to life, which shows Belly making her final choice.
In addition to the main trio, viewers have also learned more about Belly’s brother, Steven (Sean Kaufman), mom Laurel (Jackie Chung) and best friend Taylor (Rain Spencer).
Despite Han ending her book series at three novels, Vernon Sanders, who is the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, later hinted at plans for the series to grow beyond the events in the books.
“I will say stay tuned, but Jenny’s got some exciting surprises. So we’re thrilled about a season 3, and she’s got a vision for more,” he told Deadline in September 2023. “This show is going to continue to be a huge centerpiece for us, and we absolutely have plans to continue building it. Jenny’s got great vision for where she wants to go with all of it, but we’re already hard at work developing complementary pieces.”
Han added on Tuesday that she felt “lucky” that Prime Video gave her the freedom to adapt her book trilogy, saying, “Amazon Prime has been very supportive of my vision, and I haven’t felt a pressure to keep it going just to keep it going. It’s all about doing what’s best for the story. And you obviously want to give the fans a really satisfying ending.”
She concluded: “I love working with all these guys, that’s at the core of it. I would always welcome working with them on this, or something else. Who knows what the future holds?”
The Summer I Turned Pretty returns to Prime Video on July 16.
