People can thank Yolanda Hadid for starting the “almond mom trend.”
In 2022, an old clip from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills resurfaced on TikTok featuring a young Gigi Hadid telling her mom that she was “feeling really weak” after eating an almond. (Yolanda shares daughter Gigi, daughter Bella Hadid and son Anwar Hadid with ex Mohamed Hadid.)
“Have a couple of almonds and chew them really well,” Yolanda said, which led people to deem her as a #almondmom in the comments.
Later that year, Yolanda shared that the video was “taken so far out” of context.
“Gigi was calling because she wasn’t feeling good and I apparently said, half asleep, ‘Have two almonds,’” she recalled to People in October 2022. “I don’t even remember why two or what. There was no rhyme or reason to it. It’s such a silly narrative that is out there, that has nothing to do with the reality of our lives.”
An “almond mom” is defined as a parent who often imposes unhealthy eating habits and body image expectations onto their children.
“If the woman figure in the home is engaged in this restrictive eating, it’s more likely, and this is according to all the studies, that the daughter or female identifying child is going to engage in similar behavior as that parent,” dietician and nutritionist Maya Feller told ABC News in an April 2023 interview on the “almond mom” trend.
If you or someone you know struggles with an eating disorder, visit the National Eating Disorders (NEDA) website or call their hotline at (800) 931-2237 to get help.
