Bryce Dallas Howard is not ashamed to admit that her teens keep her on her toes.
“I think improv comedy is an incredible training ground for being a parent because you’re not really going in there with an agenda, per se,” Howard, 44, exclusively told Us Weekly at the premiere of Deep Cover at the Tribeca Festival on Tuesday, June 10. “You’re there to listen, to respond, to be playful and to hopefully say yes.”
Howard’s new action-comedy film, Deep Cover, which also stars Orlando Bloom, Nick Mohammed and Sean Bean, follows her character, an improv teacher, and two other improv performers (Bloom and Mohammed) as they are hired by an undercover cop (Bean) to invade London’s underground gang scene.
“This movie was fun because it was such a tight script. It was written by two improv comedians. They’re so funny. It’s very authentic for that reason. But when you get into the scene, the directors and writers were really giving us all permission to be incredibly playful,” Howard told Us. “Nick did some things that were ridiculous in the best way. He cracked us up all the time in terms of improv.”
Howard, known for roles in the Jurassic World series, Spider-Man 3, Argylle, Black Mirror and The Help, is married to fellow actor Seth Gabel. The couple tied the knot in 2006 and share two children: Theodore Norman, 18, and Beatrice Jean, 13.
“The thing that’s tricky with kids is that — I don’t know if it’s an evolutionary thing, I don’t know if it’s just me — but my kids are smarter than me, they’re faster than me, they’re quicker than me,” Howard told Us.
She added: “I think that improv helps you develop the interpersonal skills to find a win-win, especially when it comes to your kids.”
Deep Cover premieres on Prime Video Thursday, June 12.
