In the lead-up to a wedding, it’s expected that brides might have a few extenuating requests, especially of the bridal party.

For the most part, people nod their heads and go with it.

Buy a dress they’ll probably never wear again?

Sure.

Attend various pre-wedding events that have hefty price tags attached?

If they can.

But what happens when the demands extend to children?

“Bride wants flower girls to match”

Posting to Reddit, a conflicted mother explained that her 18-month-old daughter is a flower girl in her brother and sister-in-law’s upcoming wedding.

Now, two months before the big day, the bride is insisting that the little girl have her hair straightened.

According to the mom, her daughter has tight, ringette curls and the bride wants all the flower girls to “match”.

“Personally I think that 1.5 is too young to straighten her hair, it’s not good for it and the risk of burning is significant,” she wrote.

“I will obviously put in a cute headband and wet the curls and use products to make them less frizzy but I refuse to straighten them. Is this standard expectations for a flower girl at a wedding?”

Since being posted two days ago, the thread has amassed over 500 comments, with most people standing by the mom.

One commenter – a former wedding hair stylist – said they’d once been asked to do the hair of a two-year-old for a wedding, which felt “inappropriate”.

“The first thing [the child] did was reach towards the iron. I kept an entire hand hovered around the iron, because she would move unpredictably and I didn’t want to burn her sweet little head,” they shared.

According to the Queensland Government, one child a week suffers serious burns from hair straighteners, so the safety risk is real.

“What a terrible bridal request”

Another commenter added that as someone with curly hair, the child shouldn’t feel like she needs to change.

“Curly hair is beautiful and no one should be made to feel like their natural hair isn’t appropriate or right for any occasion. What a terrible request by the bride,” they argued.

In a dramatic turn of events, the mother has since updated the post after the bride discovered what she had written.

Despite the numerous comments calling the sister-in-law out for her behavior, she still didn’t see any issue with what she was asking.

“She lost it on [sic] my hubby and at this point our daughter will no longer be a flower girl and I don’t think we will be going at all… yikes,” the mother said.

People have been cheering her on in the comments – both surprised the sister-in-law didn’t apologize and encouraging them to make different plans for the day.

“Your daughter is a human being, not a bridal accessory…. At this point, I would be skipping the wedding and taking curly girly to do something fun,” one user wrote.

“Tell me you’ve never done a baby or toddler’s hair without telling me. This is so dumb and dangerous… Sounds like a bridezilla. Someone with more self awareness would apologise after seeing the post.”
