Baby shower guests baffled by ‘ridiculous’ gift registry, cover charge: ‘Pay cash on arrival’

Baby showers are all about joy and celebration, but who knew you could put a price tag on happiness?

One guest was in for a surprise when they found out you actually can!

After being invited to a friend’s baby shower she was shocked she’d need to dip into her bank account to attend.

The ‘ridiculous’ baby shower gift list

“I might be a bit out of touch here. My baby shower was eight years ago now, but I just feel that it’s a bit cheeky,” she said.

Taking to a mom’s forum she shared her experience to see if she was overreacting.

She was invited to the event at a local tea room around a month ago via a group chat, organized by the mom-to-be’s sister.  Then she was sent the gift registry.

“We had the ridiculous gift list. Everything was very particular with actual links to websites. We all had to say what we were buying so it could be crossed off the main list. Whatever, I chose something and that was that,” she explained.

Still miffed about being asked to fork out money for the present, the next request angered her even more.

“Just had a message to say that food will be $20 each and we need to pay cash on arrival,” she shared.

“The tea rooms are owned by a close family member and it’ll still be open to the public so they’re not paying to hire it out or anything.”

“I think this is the norm for baby showers”

She thinks it’s too late in the game to cancel. She’s already purchased the registry gift and no one else seems to have an issue with it.

“The mom to be is a lovely friend so of course I will still go and have a nice time,” she conceded.

She can’t help but feel annoyed that she wasn’t made aware of the added costs before accepting the invitation.

“I am by no means well off. I can’t even buy a nice, but cheaper gift as we had to choose something specific,” she said.

Commenters were quick to chime in with their opinion.

“Wishlists are normal. You aren’t necessarily required to follow the wishlist but most do as it’s easier,” one wrote.

“Well obviously if they’re having the shower at a venue where you’d pay for food, you’d be, er, paying for the food,” a second agreed.

A third agreed: “I think this is the norm for baby showers. Most go for afternoon tea and guests all pay for their own.”
