What are you watching this weekend? If the answer is “The Office again,” stop right there.
Log on to Hulu and check out one of these underrated series. They’re all a little quirky and more than a little entertaining, with excellent casts and top-notch writing.
Watch With Us has picked out three shows for you to get obsessed with this weekend — our selections star actors like Topher Grace, Eric McCormack and Jimmy O. Yang. Whether you want laughs, thrills or something totally unexpected, we’ve got you covered. Check out our picks below.
‘Home Economics’ (2021-2023)
We’re starting this list off simple and sweet with Home Economics, an underrated family sitcom we wish had gotten more seasons. The story follows three adult siblings, Tom (Topher Grace), Sarah (Caitlin McGee) and Connor (Jimmy Tatro) who are all raising kids around the same age — but they’re all in very different economic situations.
As they navigate parenting, careers and relationships — and the ways money factors into all of those things — the members of this extended family have each other’s backs. Tatro continues to prove himself as a comedy star in his best role since American Vandal, while Sasheer Zamata (SNL, Agatha All Along) is particularly entertaining as Sarah’s wife, Denise. There’s nothing groundbreaking going on in Home Economics, but it’s warm, funny and surprising enough to feel fresh anyway.
‘The Other Black Girl’ (2023)
If you’re looking for something a little more high-concept than Home Economics, check out The Other Black Girl, a mystery thriller based on the excellent novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris. The show follows Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel), an editorial assistant at Wagner Publishing who happens to be the only Black woman in the office. When a second Black woman, Hazel-May McCall (Ashleigh Murray), is hired, Nella is thrilled to have an ally — but before long, she begins to feel like they’re being pitted against each other.
Confused by Hazel’s behavior, Nella begins to investigate. Before long, she discovers a conspiracy involving Black women, publishing and — surprisingly — hair products. The Other Black Girl is a fascinating examination of corporate politics that also features Eric McCormack and Garcelle Beauvais.
‘Interior Chinatown’ (2024)
Looking for a show that’s even more unusual? Hold onto your hat and check out Interior Chinatown. This Hulu miniseries, based on the novel by Charles Yu (who also served as showrunner), is a layered meta-comedy that’s part police procedural, part social satire and part crime caper.
Jimmy O. Yang stars as Willis Wu, a waiter at a Chinatown restaurant who gets pulled into a criminal conspiracy that takes him to places he never thought he’d go — including beyond the fourth wall. Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) costars, along with comedian Ronny Chieng. It’s trippy, surprising and completely unforgettable.
